My 93 SE-R has the original suspension it came with, and after more than 150k miles and 10 years I figure its overdue for a replacement. I plan on replacing pretty much everything thats down there. What reccomendations can you guys make as to what companies' products that I should be using to do this? I have no real interest in lowering anything, because the roads are awful where I have to drive, not to mention all the the titanic speed bumps that I have to drive over, and I dont want the roads to be eating my car for lunch. So what can you guys reccomend? I have done a search, but most of what I came up with had to do with shock/spring combos for lowering your car. Thanks ahead of time for your help.:)

Your springs are probably OK, unless they're severely rusted - they don't really wear out. You could go for OEM replacements if you need them, or the Gen 2 Hypercoils only lower the car about an inch (and knowing OEM prices, are probably cheaper than new stock springs). You could probably also find used stockers here on the forum, cheap, if you really need them.

As far as struts, the world is your oyster. Any aftermarket strut that will work with lowering springs (as opposed to coilovers) will work with OEM springs. I recommend KYB AGX or GR2 struts. The AGXs are adjustable, the GR2s are not (these are essentially OEM replacements, just a little heavier duty from what I hear). You could also go the budget route with Monroes or the like, although I'd stay away from Gabriels.

Since you'll have it all apart, replace the thrust bearings in the front, and the rubber spring seat pads all around (there are two in each strut assembly). I wouldn't bother replacing the upper strut mounts unless they show excessive signs of wear. You will also want to replace the lower mounting bolts, two on each strut.

To do the install make sure you use a spring compressor, and make sure you support the car on jack stands, NEVER a jack alone. If you don't know what any of these things are, you'll want to get a Haynes manual and check it out.

Hope this helps.

IMHO, what I'd do:

- Energy Suspension bushings
- Front and rear swaybars: Progress adjustables are the current hotness.
- Rear strut tower brace. There aren't many commercial choices, but there's a group deal on in the Classic section.
- KYB AGX struts and new strut assembly hardware.

I don't know what the lifespan of a stock spring is, but you can still have a fun, sharp-handling SE-R without aftermarket springs (see sig pic below ;)). Besides replacing the worn out parts, one of the best things to do is get a set of better wheels and tires if you haven't already. 195/50-15 or 205/50-15 is perfect for our cars.

thanks guys. this is exactly the info I was looking for. Unfortnately I am the typical poor college student, but maybe my tax check will help me out. If my car is happy then I am happy

I went with progressive springs and tokiko blue struts. I dont know about KYB's, but Tokiko has a nice warranty. I had a blowout and got it replaced for cost of shipping, and I didnt have an original receipt of purchase. i later did the strut braces and sway bars....Good Luck, Josh

the cheapest place to get KYB GR2 struts are from tire rack. $44 for each front, $46 for each rear. far less than anyone else. id say that there a lot more than a regular OEM replacement, there in the range of tokico blues but better.
