Ok my car is making some strange noise. At first I thought it was the tires I had, but I'm starting to thing that it's the rear axle. Is there any way to add grease to the axle? I'm guessing that's what it needs. Anyone?

hmm first think that comes to mind is maybe its the rear brakes or a wheel bearing..

Are you sure you didn't roll over a slow Honduh? Maybe a piece of his glasspack muffler is stuck on something.

Wheel bearing. Drive it and turn the steering wheel back and forth, like your swerving. If the pitch of the sound changes, I would recommend replacing the wheel bearing.

swerving, swurving? oh well.

Damnit I was scared you would say that! Are they the same about the same cost as the front wheel bearings?

Not sure what they cost. But aren't cheap.

I second the wheel bearing diagnosis.

I agreed on the wheel bearing. Mine 91 does the same thing, loud pitch hum. I thought bald tires, nope!
I will order from Autozone or Courtesy, yup 65 bones per pop.

I looked online and I guess I have to buy the entire rear hub assembly. $100 each side. So how long can I drive with the bearings like this?

i don't think there are rear axles on front wheel drive cars.

woohoo!!! 500th post! there should be a category called "forum slut", but maybe after 1000 posts or something.

 By definition an axle is a rod on which a wheel turns. What does RWD/FWD have to do with anything? Post whore elsewhere;)

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Too funny, Matt.

DO you have an FSM for your ride?

If not, I will be glad to copy & fax you the sections on the rear hub assembly if required.

PM me if you need them...

I don't have a FSM unfortunately, or a fax machine. Does it look like a PITA to replace them?:(

I haven't looked at it yet - I'll take a look and let you know.

I'm a mechanic-in-training, and the install looks pretty straight forward & intuitive, if you have mechanical ability at all.

The toughest parts look like:

Removing the bearing hub nut, which is torqued to between 137-188 ft-lbs. Better have a cheater bar, or even better, an impact wrench.

Second toughie is only a problem if you have ABS. You have to remove the ABS sensor prior to removing the hub to prevent damaging it.

Third, having a torque wrench that will reach around 137-188ft-lbs. Or, have the brute force to torque it that tight.

It looks easy to me - I'd have no problem doing it if you were near ATL.

Funniest thing, since you described the noise as a howl/hum - Nissan describes the symptom as "growling noise from the rear bearing hub while in operation"

If you can get access to a fax, I'll be glad to send you the info. Or, I can copy it at my office & mail it to you, if you prefer. Then you could judge for yourself.

Oh, as a PS, Nissan says to apply oil to the threaded portion of the spindle & to both sides of the washer during installation.

Let me know if I can help - I'll be glad to...

Well I have all the necessary tools. I'll go ahead and order the bearing on Monday. I'm hoping it's only one side, that's all I can afford at the moment.

Cool.

Hopefully I was of some help.

Ok, the bearing or hub, or the entire thing?
