: what kind of oil is everyone using
honkeybizkit 02-27-2003, 08:50 PM just like the subjects says, what kind of oil are you running in your sr20de.
when my motor finds its way into the car, roughly another week or 2, i will either be using Amsoil or Royal Purple. only reason for royal purple is the easy availability and its chocked full of moly, but ive always liked Amsoil.

santo51 02-27-2003, 09:12 PM i got mobile but not synthetic i got the blend
honkeybizkit 02-27-2003, 09:13 PM i have ran mobile 1 in a few cars, a zc powered civic, vr6 jetta and friends have ran it in their cars.. when running extended drain intervals (5,000mi +) i noticed the mobile1 like to disappear. it would be burning a qt or so. the vr6 motor really doesnt like mobile 1, burned nearly 3qts up till the 6,000mi mark! although the vr6 was designed to burn a fair amount of oil (it really runs well on valvoline synpower). my expiriences with mobile 1 havent been good, but id be willing to try it in my se-r. its weird how different oils react with different engines.
have u noticed any exxcessive oil consumption on M1?
MaddMatt 02-27-2003, 09:15 PM Mobil 1, 5W-30. 25+ track weekends, zero problems. Compression is within 3psi of spec over all cylinders. I'll never buy another brand ever again.
ITR_KILLR 02-27-2003, 09:29 PM tried all types of Mobil 1, 5W-30 seems to work best. (maybe 10W-30 when it gets really hot)

Valvoline Max Life 5w30 for guys who like cars... $2 a quart and engine seems happy...
why would i spend $5 a quart on mobil 1 so it would increase consumption and still spin a bearing someday????

ashtonsnissannx 02-27-2003, 11:33 PM I have come to the conclusion that synthetic isnt really that good. It may be good performance wise but if you dont want to be replacing gaskets dont use it. I had my engine completely rebuilt and it only has 8000 miles on it. I did my break in with regular valvoline all climate oil and really babied it for the first 500 miles. didnt even take the engine over 4000 rpms. changed the oil and it was crystal clear. Then I still babied it for another 1000 miles. just drove it like a normal person would. no abuse period. not worth the damage it could cause during the breakin. the temptation was there but I resisted. Anyways the engine has all new seals. every last one of them. After the 1500 mile break in I started to use synthetic. I used that royal purple 10w-30. It was fine for about the first 2000 miles then I started getting leaks. mainly valve cover and oil pan. oil pan was really bad. so anyways I just changed my oil pan gasket about a week ago and put in mobile 1 sythetic 10w-30 and now the oil pan and valve cover both leak again and I think the rear main also has a small leak in it also. I am loosing about a quart of oil every 200 miles of driving. I am not consuming it in the engine because at that rate you would see it pouring out blue smoke from your exhaust. Engine doesnt smoke one bit. Even though the engine runs like crap because the people that rebuilt it didnt do a very good job it doesnt consume hardly any oil at all. not even enough to notice after 3000 miles. In this I am talking before I had this very bad leak. I am pretty sure it is the pan gasket and the rear main that are leaking. There is a little oil inside the bell housing. Anyways I wont be using sythetic ever again. I think my car runs better without it. I will be using the valvoline all climate regular motor oil. I put some in today and I does seem like the engine runs better than it did with sythetic. I will be putting a jdm engine in this time. the engine and everything on it has only 40 thousand miles on it. better than using all of the old crap. I am disappointed with the work that was done on the rebuild but hey it happens. Car will run like new when I put that jdm in. but I will def not put sythetic in it. I have gone through about three valve cover gaskets trying to get it to stop leaking. tried everything. When I was using regular valvoline I didnt have any leaks. This is just some advise. plus regular oil is a heck of a lot cheaper. royal purple $7/quart mobile 1 syth $5/quart/ valvoline all climate $1.75/quart. No more for me. just had to get it out of my system guys. I am a little angry right now. I should have gone with the jdm engine in the first place. for one it would have been cheaper. two I wouldnt have had to wait two months to get my car back because I would have had the engine in about a week. and three everything on the engine including the engine is practically new. But the thing is I didnt know about these jdm engines when I did this. darn. wont make that mistake again. I will be replacing the basic stuff on the jdm engine befor I put it in. thermostat, water pump, and rear main seal. and the egr equipment if the engine doesnt come with it. I think the ones on mine arnt working that well. dont know. sorry again for the length. whew

Don't forget those pesky rod bearings...:D
NismoPC 02-28-2003, 12:58 PM On a NA SR20DE highly recommended to use 5W30 5W30 5W30 all of the time. I religiously use Castrol GTX 5W30 and will not use any other weight oil because of this:
(And yes I believe it is true)
