: Oil Drain line
david 02-28-2003, 01:40 PM I would like some comments on a different type of oil drain. I know I could do the normal hose with hose clamps but I would rather do something like this.
This is in relation to a t28 gtir turbo.
Instead of the the normal drain on the turbo I would like to replace it with this.

I believe I will just have to enlarge the holes so the flange will fit.
I belive it presents a 1/2" NPT fitting so the next fitting I would use would be this.
http://www.anplumbing.com/shop/images/63804508.jpg
That would have a 45 degree angle so it will point down toward the drain hole in the block. Then I would use a length of this hose.

The swivel 45 degree flex fitting would take the hose and make a nice snug fit. The end that plugs into the block I would like to use the same swivel fitting as before but I'm not sure if that would be the best option.
Opinions/Comments/Flames?
it would cost a lot less to use barb fittings instead of using AN fittings. i you want, i could get you all the fittings for the oil supply...
1 - 1/8" bspt tee, 1 male to 2 female
2 - 1/8" bspt to 9mm barb fitting (one for the oil pressure sensor, one for the block. the reason i use 1/8"bspt for the block is to keep the fitting sizes simlilar and eliminate any chance of screw up)
2 - 1/2" npt to 9mm barb fitting
david 02-28-2003, 02:34 PM I'm trying to stay away from the barb fittings so I don't have to worry about them leaking later down the line.
I figure spend the money now and do it right.
spdracerUT 02-28-2003, 04:47 PM You don't want the 45 right out of the turbo. You want it to head straigth down out of the turbo and then have the bend later. Having a bend right out of the turbo can be enough of a flow restriction that the oil could stay backed up in the turbo which is bad for the bearings.
Khiem
myprojectB13 02-28-2003, 05:32 PM Then why does the stock oil drain fitting have a 45 degree angle right out of the turbo?

The stock drain has a 45 degree angle on it. Well maybe a bit more.
You have to remember its a gravity feed, its not pressurized so you have to have some sort of downward bend or it will get backed up like you said.
What I'm trying to accomplish is the same thing the stock drain does but without using a hose with hose clamps.
1fastser 02-28-2003, 09:27 PM It would definately look good with the A/N fittings but I doubt a barb fitting for this application would be prone to leaking simply because it's a "drain" and not pressurized like david mentioned.
I considered the same thing for my T3/TO4E and I think I need the first item you posted. I've decided on a NPT to barb fitting for the turbo drain. You can see the fitting I JBWelded into the block in the top left of the pic below:

For the oil feed to the turbo I will splice into the line coming from the oil filter relocation so the turbo gets freshly cleaned/cooler oil. Let me know if you want the A/N part numbers.

spdracerUT 03-01-2003, 01:26 AM hmmm....... can't quite remember what the drain on my t25 looks like. Damn, haven't had to look at it which I guess is a good thing! Well, i guess you want the oil drain line vertical because it's draining because of gravity.
Hey Jody, so whatcha got going on there....
1fastser, you JBwelded a fitting to the blcik and your worried about a leaking barb fitting?
1fastser 03-01-2003, 10:14 AM I never said *I* was worried about a leaking barb fitting...that was a response to david's comment: I'm trying to stay away from the barb fittings so I don't have to worry about them leaking later down the line.
And, trust me, the fitting will not leak. It is a professionally done ghetto job that far exceeds the infamous scoop. ;)
Hey Jody, so whatcha got going on there....
Same as you Khiem, "a few tweaks here and there... :)"
Take a gander...

ohh im sorry, i read you wrong. hey you got any close up pics of your JB weld oil drain. did you ever consider using a sort of silicone instead. something flexible so it doesnt crack, but still holds in place.
1fastser 03-01-2003, 07:44 PM I don't see why it's necessary for silicone. It's not rigid or under tension, just a drain hose from the turbo. I'll try an take a pic.

unlucky 03-01-2003, 07:53 PM So, does ANYONE make an oil feed and drain kit for the T25/T28 setup? I would like to buy some!
Travis
1fastser 03-01-2003, 07:59 PM Julian, here's a pic of the JBWelded oil drain. Factory, I tell ya. ;)
Note the "cast iron grey" paint...daddy likes.

Where can one purchase this piece from? I need one too!
The drain from the T3/TO4E turbo looks like this:

I need that piece david...where, where, where!

CharlieH98 03-01-2003, 08:15 PM Is this the fitting you need?
turbo drain (http://www.store.yahoo.com/sr20performance/t3oildrainfl.html)
Or carve one out of a steel pipe floor fitting from Home Depot for $1.25 ;)
Cheers,
Charlie
1fastser 03-01-2003, 08:25 PM Looks like the one...Thanks Charlie.
I just emailed Louis.
1fastser, has the oil drain been tested yet? i would hate for it to crack. as for the oil drain flange, look on ebay and search for "t3 flange". i got mines from there for $16.00 and it looks a lot nicer.
1fastser 03-02-2003, 02:57 PM What makes you think it would crack? It's not like I JBWelded a cracked rod. There are no forces acting on the drain and heat is not a problem.
Thanks, I'll check ebay for "t3 flange". What's nicer about yours? The one Louis is selling (posted by CharlieH98) is a billet Al piece.
the reason im worried about it cracking is because of the different expansion rates of the aluminum and JBweld when heated.
1fastser 03-03-2003, 05:14 PM ...not worried...till it happens...don't think it will...we shall see...
...nothing on ebay
