Well my Clutch Cable snapped on me today on my way to lunch. Anyone replaced one of these before? Any tips?

They arent that hard brad, if yours is like mine, just take off the wheel well lining to get the cruise control stuff out of the way then u can unbolt it from the firewall easier. I think after that you can pull it off of the pedal and then off of the clutch arm. Honestly its a job that you can def. do yourself

Actually... now that I've had a chance to look at it, I think it's actually the return spring. The cable looks fine to me. If I manually move the cable at the transmission side, I can move the clutch pedal. To me, this tells me that it's not the cable but the return spring or something else.

Basically my problem is that I was on my way to lunch today and when I tried to put the clutch in for a 2nd to 3rd gear shift... the clutch went right to the floor and didn't come up.

Lol... well I was lucky. It happened right after I was going through the 301/60 intersection. I had just shifted from second into third and then.... nothing. I was able to coast into the Honda dealership and parked the car there. I was on my lunch break and as luck would have it, Heather was only minutes away and was going to meet me for lunch. So she just picked me up, got lunch, and then she took me back to work. I just finished getting the car towed to my parents house...

After playing with it a little and doing some research, the clutch cable may just need to be adjusted. Hopefully that's all it is... because I really don't want to have to drop the tranny in order to replace the return spring.

We'll find out tomorrow after work if that's all it is...

What kind of PP are you running? Have you looked at the clutch arm/fork? I've snapped 2 of them, but I'm also running a Xtreme PP.

Stock... with nearly 100k on it.

Now that the car is paid off, I'll be able to put some money into it once I finish up with Basic and Tech School.

I'll look at it more tonight after work if it's not raining out...

Ok! Found out today what the problem was...

The Withdrawal lever is cracked and bent. That's the lever that the clutch cable attaches to on the transmission side. Because it's bent, the clutch cable is too loose and can't function properly. I would suggest that if anyone ever has this problem (that the clutch pedal won't return from the floor) that they check this part first.

It looks like the withdrawal lever could be bent back in place and welded up... then if a piece of scrap metal was welded over the cracked area it would further strengthen the repair. Unfortunatly I don't weld or have any of the equipment, but Dave-ROR does and he said he'd come over and take a look at it for me. So hopefully the '96 will be back up and running this weekend. =)

That's the part I was talking about. I've snapped 2. Chances are you're going to have to replace it. Unfortunately the tranny has to be pulled to do it.:(

I snapped mine at at 85K Miles. Tranny had to be dropped but it was a warranty item. I would weld in a piece on the inside to reinforce it.

How was it covered under warranty at 85k? Extended warranty?

Well I decided to just fix the problem right... since I'm going in the Air Force I don't want to leave Heather saddled with this problem, so I'm going to replace this the right way.

I've purchased a ACT Clutch Kit (HD Pressure Plate/Street Disk)
A Fidanza Flywheel from the group buy link (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36203)
A new Nissan shifter cable
A new Nissan return spring
a new Nissan withdrawl lever (The part that actually broke)
4qts of Redline MT-90

So this week I should be getting them in and hopefully I'll be able to get my car back on the road by the end of next weekend.

Oh, I'm doing the work myself... so if anyone has any advice or knows of a good write up online (or wants to help)... let me know!

Have a piece of metal welded into the hollow side of the return lever. You have a good chance of breaking that same part with an upgraded clutch. Do it for Heather.

I agree, it's pretty simple to have done, and it's extra insurance.

Yeah, I think that's good advice... does anyone have any pics so I can see how it's been done in the past?
