I am interested in getting some numbers on how many people out there are running w/o a cat. converter. I have thought about taking mine off for some easy HP gains. I mean, as long as everyone in the world isn't doing it, it shouldn't hurt the earth too bad.
Anyone have estimates on how much power you would expect from doing this?

Unless its clogged, or maybe if your turbo'd, very minimal gains, if any.

yeah, the stock cats on sr20 engine are pretty big, plus you might lose some buttom end doing so on a NA engine.

Haha... well, sounds like this is DEFINITELY something that I wont be doing. Thanks for the info guys.
The input I get from this board is superb. It seems like all users are pretty knowledgable and willing to help. Thanks!

I only removed mine because the BOLTS were rusted. :(

I have a magnaflow hi-flow cat and I lost no power on the dyno with the cat or the test pipe.

I think the question here is...
yea, but did you gain any power?
If so, what were the gains if any? From what I have read and have seen, there is no gain to be had from a test-pipe or free-flow cat on a stock to highly modded SR20 until it is turbo'd or majorly worked internally.

I removed mine just for the hell of it. It helps when you're boosting but that's about it. I'm going to put one back on because not having one gives your car the "old car" stank!

Hmm... well I dont see why you would remove it if the bolts were rusted. That would seem like a reason NOT to take it off!
From what I've gathered, there are no positives from this operation. Just stank and loudness! Oh, unless 2 or 3 lbs is keeping you from breaking into the single digits...

from the 2 dyno runs, one with hi-flow cat, one with test pipe, there were almost no differences. I hit ~142 hp/~128 ft-lbs on both runs...changing the cat and test pipe gave it time to cool as well

Cool, sounds like you solved the problem. BTW, where do you run your dynos at?
I guess that its official -- cats are not bad. They just clean the air. Nice to know that a government mandated (or used to be) part actually doesnt hinder performance.
