: OIL Pressure Gauge?
Johnny wangwang 03-12-2003, 02:03 AM I need to know how hard it is to hook up a Mechanical oil pressure gauge (autometer) on my NX2000. I dont have any kind of idea how. What will I need to acomplish this. And how long do you think it would take a shop to do it, if I couldnt do it myself?
Victorious 03-12-2003, 09:51 AM I don't know too much about gauges. But I'd recommend you get a electric gauge instead of a mechanical oil gauge. That way you won't be running the oil into the cabin. Just a suggestion. As far as installation is concerned. I would go here: www.nissport.com and purchase their oil pressure adapter. It fits into the stock location and allows you to use your stock sending unit as well as an aftermarket one.
I hope this helps. If not do a search, there is tons of info in the forum database.
98sr20ve 03-12-2003, 09:58 AM If you know how to do basic mechanical stuff connecting a gauge to the Nissport adapter is not that hard. It's actually harder to find a clean way to blend it into your cabin. I would also recommend the electric gauge. It is very easy to install. Just get the switched power from the cigarette lighter and then one wire goes to the sender, for the light you can tap into the existing power to one of your bulbs in temperature panel area. The process is the same for a mechanical gauge except you don’t need a wire going to the sender instead you have a long plastic tube that tends to get crushed, melted, bent, or in some other fashion damaged.

If you do decide to use the mechancle AutoMeter gauge, you can purchase an "isolator" from them that will keep the oil out of the interior.
Johnny wangwang 03-12-2003, 07:57 PM I have already bought the gauge and it is mechanical.
Johnny wangwang 03-12-2003, 08:21 PM From what ive heard the Electric ones mess up alot and somtimes dont read accuratly. But anyhow, what does the isolator do? Wouldnt that basically make it an electric gauge?
geeio 03-12-2003, 09:47 PM so is our only option to get that 40 dollar nisport piece ? cause i have to do the same thing. kinda sucks cause i only spent 20 bucks on the guage itself. guess i might ahve to just wait till pay time to install this .
Serban 03-12-2003, 11:45 PM The mechanical oil filter is more of a pain in the ass because you have to run a line with oil into your cabin. I for one dont want oil in there, so I got the electrical gauge, had it for 2+ years, and no problems with it yet.
As for the Nissport piece, I have one, but because I need a T for my oil feed to the turbo. If you're all motor, just take out your stock oil pressure sender, and put the Autometer one there, you don't need the Nissport piece.

Nooooo! If you do that, you'll surely mess up the threads on your block. You must get an adapter. I forget the exact adapter you need, something like a 1/4" BPST to NPT, but doing a search will point you in the right direction.

Eh...I put mine in there and didnt mess anything up
Johnny wangwang 03-13-2003, 05:03 AM Okay my oil gauge costed 25 so that is not the issue it is already a done deal. Can someone run through the procedure again with me. What is it that I need to buy extra to make this gauge work?

Well, I guess if you're gonna leave it in there, you will be ok. But if you take it out, you'll see that you messed up your threads. Ask me how I know....
SR20RACER 03-13-2003, 02:24 PM I have a mechanical gauge and haven't had any probs with it. It is simple to install. Good Luck

The Nisport adpater is 1/8 BSPT where it screws into the block. It is designed to be used with no adpaters needed.

It allows your mechanical gauge to read pressure with out having the oil come into direct contact with the gauge.
Summit Racing (www.summitracing.com) sells them.
so is our only option to get that 40 dollar nisport piece ?
No, you can find an adapter from somewhere else. Check the SE-R mailing list archives. But whatever you do, don't use a brass or aluminum adapter. Those will eventually break.

Indeed. The engine I bought to build The Beast had a VDO 1/8 NPT sending unit cross-threaded into the oil filter bracket. I couldn't understand why I could never get the stock oil pressure switch to seal. I had to use lots of Teflon paste and thread that puppy way in there. I was always concerned about stripping the threads.

Its been out now for a few months, I have a Nissport adapter now after I went turbo, cant say I had any problems.
Johnny wangwang 03-14-2003, 12:12 AM Nissport adapter: Where do I get it? Anybody have one they dont need.
Johnny wangwang 03-14-2003, 12:13 AM So after I get this adapter all I need to do is run the line into the cabin and hook it up? or do I need anything else??
98sr20ve 03-14-2003, 08:08 AM Don't you have some instructions? It's basically the tube to the gauge and then a power and ground wire for the lights.
