: My new turbo classic exhaust situation
SE-Rfornow 03-17-2003, 12:17 AM I'm just looking for additional input in my situation. I am in the process of buying paNX2K&SE-R's turbo classic and I was wondering what I should do with the exhaust. He has a VRS group buy 3" Mandrel bent exhaust with Magnalfow resonator and SS muffler and also a new test pipe. I really don't want droning or anything when I'm cruising (I do a lot of highway driving) but I don't mind a little music in my ears when I go WOT. Matt mentioned a silencer but I couldn't find any for a 5inch tip. The only other thing I could think of is adding a second resonator or highflow cat instead of the test pipe. I tried searching all of the archives but I couldn't find anything conclusive. Any suggestions to reduce the noise would be appreciated or else I might be forced to go stock exhaust
:p . Thanks for your help ahead of time guys (and gals I guess).
dude just buy the car! if the exhaust bothers you put the stock exhaust back on
sr20ser 03-17-2003, 02:47 AM With the turbo and the mentioned exhaust it should'nt be all that loud or drone. If I were you, I would buy a high-flow cat.
bl200sx 03-17-2003, 10:18 AM yeah, a cat will tone it down somewhat.
SERprise In WV 03-17-2003, 10:48 AM Stuff the longest Dynomax resonator you can underneath the car.
Put the stock exhaust back on? That will choke and eventually kill the turbo.
Don't do that. :)
paNX2K&SE-R 03-17-2003, 11:02 AM It already has the long 3" Dynomax resonator :)
SE-Rfornow 03-17-2003, 11:32 AM SERprise In WV: I have heard a lot of stuff going back and forth about killing a turbo with a stock exhaust. I know it does cause backpressure but I have also heard that it will not hurt the turbo... the performance will just suffer. So, let's come to a conclusion on killing the turbo.
bl200sx and sr20ser: I was really thinking about scrapping the test pipe and getting a high flow cat but do you know if this would really change the noise?
egg: Don't worry man I am definately sold on the car, I'm just wondering what to do about the exhaust. There is no way I am passing on my chance for a turbo classic:cool:
blackb13 03-17-2003, 06:20 PM Guys I have a similar exhaust. 3in dynomax resonator and magnaflow muffler with a 3in test pipe. It was loud as shit. I then ended up putting the 3in cat in for emmissions, but it still "drones" on the highway. I was thinking about using two small resonators instead of the big one...similar to the Greddy system for the WRX.
bl200sx 03-17-2003, 07:59 PM hummmmm........well you might want to go with 2 resonators. What I run, is a 3in cat, 3in exhaust to a Magnaflow w/3 1/2in tip, but I like it kinda loud, and this is not my daily driver.
Big John 03-17-2003, 08:38 PM I run down pipe into two 16" dynomax bullets., no exhaust Doesn't sound to bad to me. With piping and muffler, it would be pretty quiet
SE-Rfornow 03-17-2003, 09:11 PM Matt basically summed it up by telling me that you can't get a quiet 3" exhaust. My question for you guys is what is the power difference between 3" and stock. Obviously it is significant but like how many hp? I enjoy power but I am wondering if it is worth the noise. Like I said before I do a lot of highway driving. Is there any other options like a 2.5" exhaust or would that present the same problem of damaging the turbo? Speaking of which, does anyone have any conclusive opinion or information on damaging the turbo with a stock exhaust?! I am torn between keeping the exhaust and adding a silencer (does anyone know where to get a silencer for a 5inch tip? or the best place for silencers), a high flow cat or some other configuration. So what would you do in my situation? Also, would a silencer present the same problems that a stock exhaust would (if it does indeed cause probs)? Thanks again for the input.
On my 300zx, i was running just an open exhuast with only the stock cats on it, and it was LOUD! Since its dual exhuast back from the headers I put a 24" glasspack on each side, along with just a cheap OBX muffler, and it went from the one extreme of LOUD to almost dead quiet inside the car with the windows up. Outside the car you still hear a little roar if you get on the throttle, but not anything like those fart-cans on hondas.
SE-Rfornow 03-17-2003, 10:13 PM I was thinking about a glasspack, its just that a lot of people are saying resonator so do you know if the glasspack is better than a resonator? The quiet inside is exactly what I'm hoping for but I'm getting more and more discouraged. What size exhaust were you running (2.25-3")?
SERprise In WV 03-18-2003, 10:07 AM Here's the only info you need to know:
T28 turbo setup, stock 1 and 7/8"-2.0" exhaust: 14.57 @ 95mph
T28 turbo setup, 3" exhaust from dp back: 13.70 @ 99mph
Almost one full second.
Think that small exhaust isn't hurting the car? ;)
SE-Rfornow 03-18-2003, 06:03 PM Wow...well umm that looks pretty conclusive:eek: ! I didn't know that it would affect it that much. Is that your car? The mph seems a little low for the 3" setup for the time but what do I know. What I am thinking of doing is not purchasing the 3" exhaust that is on the car right now, getting the car for cheaper because of this and going with asspipes (w/resonator of course). Does anyone have any other ideas (I searched and I did see some alternatives) or do you know which 3" setup is the quietest? Thanks for the help once again guys.
SE-Rfornow 03-19-2003, 03:39 PM What about 2.5"? I'm thinking that this might be a good compromise between sound and power but I was wondering if you could provide more of that informative help SERprise:D
