: no egr--no pass emissions, me mad
gpriceynissan 03-28-2003, 07:38 PM Hey all, I have my egr blocked off right now, and went to get emissions tested today. It failed miserably. I know my o2 sensor is switching fast, so I guess I'll test the pre-cat emissions tomorrow. But, DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE NO EGR AND HAS PASSED EMISSIONS? oh, and they killed it twice mid test, which may have had a lot to do with it failing...or not. I have t25/intercooled/370's/stock ecu with s-afc. PLEASE HELP!
thepep 03-28-2003, 08:15 PM What did you fail? Post results.
Steve
CanadianG 03-28-2003, 09:22 PM I got the fix, after you check that your O2 sensor and catyliticare good
blairellis 03-29-2003, 12:44 AM you expect to pass with no egr and a turbo? somehow i think your going to have like 2 or 3 cats under your car
Did you retard your timing? That might make enough of a difference to pass.
I won't be running EGR but I expect to pass emissions with a DET. They have a "hot rod" exemption for engine swaps though, so the car will be tested according to average emissions for a 1980 model year.
Loe Lyf 03-29-2003, 11:05 AM Hot rod emmissions are only valid if your engine is a bigger displacement than your previous one. Since a DET is still 1998CC, it isn't considered a hotrod. I hate to burst your bubble, but I was hoping for the same thing.
I could be wrong, but this is what i heard from lots of people.
gpriceynissan 03-29-2003, 03:46 PM Ok...here's what's gone down so far. First run--6grams HC(.8 limit), 16g CO(15g limit), and 6g NOX(2g limit). I have the original converter installed. O2 sensor does switch good, except goes way rich upon accel. I've tried tuning with the afc to get it leaner, but then the HC's just skyrocket, so i don't think that's the problem. That test was yesterday.
Today--I installed my EGR AND the AIV crap so that the entire system is stock. I also installed the buttplug on my muffler(figuring backpressure might help emissions?) and tested again---here's the results--2.5gHC, 18gCO, 5gNOX. So it is still sucky...
Then today I poked around. I remembered when I set the timing last I couldn't get it into timing mode, so i just set it idleing. I DID get it into timing mode today--and the timing was at like 20 or 25 degrees or something! I brought it down a LOT to 13. Adding to that, even with the o2 switching FAST I was getting .5%CO and 150HC(on an old emissions test machine), so my CAT must be junk too. Oh well, I'll replace the cat and try again monday.
Also, do people with warm air intakes pass emissions? anyone here do it??

sweet my car was a GA16, then i went to a SR20DET so does this mean i can do the hotrod thing, and what is that exactly....
thanks

Both of those guys are from Ontario, so I don't think this applies here.

CanadianG 03-30-2003, 03:07 PM -1 gallon of denatured alcohol(get it from local hardware store)
-1/2 tank of gas(87 octane no higher)
dont drive car hard to emissions testing center
-make sure you fill tank with gas after emission test to dillute alcohol

I'd find some 110 octane unleaded after running that:eek: hehe :)

Really? Well, I'll find out soon, and post here!
You're not running EGR either, are you?

Nope. Let me know when you find out. If I find out before you do, I'll let you know.
When are you getting tested? Mine will be done in early May.

I think my car will be ready at the end of this week, so probably next week sometime I will find out.
I'll let you know.

Cool, thanks. I think with retarded timing, you shouldn't have a problem.
BTW, on the Driveclean web site, they make no mention of engine displacement for the hot rod category, but I'll see what happens when I actually go and get tested.
Also, to prove that you qualify for the hot rod classification, they advise you to bring the bill of sale for your new engine to your Driveclean testing session.
