: Tach not working!! Help Please
CivicsSuck 03-30-2003, 03:34 PM For some reason my tach is not working unless I give it gas. When the car is ideling the tach reads 0 RPM, but when I give it enough gas the tach will jump up to whatever.:(
This is all happening after a motor swap I did awhile ago. Since I just got my car back from getting it painted I have been putting everything back to normal and all has been going good until now.
Anyone's opinion as to what is going on or as to what to do would be very appreciated. Thanks.;)
BlkB14 03-30-2003, 04:33 PM yea..mine too, it just reads off sometimes...like, it will like to go to 9k...yes 9k...just on the tach reading though...i know, by the sound of the motor, that it's not that high, i can tell by the intake sound when i get around 7-7500, so that's a good thing when i'm racing, that i know my car enough, but yea if anyone has any ideas???, i don't know what to do.
i've searched a few times on here and se-r.net, but nothing
I don't want a monster tach, lol
CivicsSuck 03-30-2003, 04:57 PM This sux! I have a new cluch in there and don't want to beat the hell out of it when I get my car on the road. Yeah, I know my car enough to know when too high of an RPM is too high, but I just want my tach back!
I checked all the wires I can see for bad connections, but nothing seemed to work.
I know someone out there can help, so come on SE-R buddies!
NismoSER 03-30-2003, 11:13 PM I had this problem a couple months ago. Its a bad tachometer. Just find a replacement from a forum member or junkyard and its a quick 10-minute swap. Heck, if you need a tach from a 93-94, I can sell you the whole cluster.
Oh, and search! I know I've posted about and to this problem in the past.

CivicsSuck 03-31-2003, 11:02 AM can you just swap the tach, or do you have to swap the whole cluster??? If you can just do the tach, is it one piece or do you have to replace the whole thing. The only reason I ask is cause I just put stick on gauge covers while the cluster was out and really don't want to waist the $40 if I have to replace the whole cluster.
NismoSER 03-31-2003, 12:28 PM You can swap out just the tach, but you'll still need to pull out the whole cluster. Reason I'd rather sell the whole cluster is that just the tach alone is kind of fragile, its much more secure if it was shipped in the cluster. You could keep your stick on gauge faces, but you'll have to go through that painstaking process of removing the needle.
CivicsSuck 03-31-2003, 02:44 PM How exactly do you get just the tach out? Don't you have to take the needle off anyways? Do you have a tach for sale?
NismoSER 03-31-2003, 03:40 PM You take out the cluster, there are probably 4 screws holding it in after you remove the surrounding black trim.
Unplug a few wire harnesses from the back of the cluster and then the tach is screwed into the cluster by about 5 or so screws. Its really simple once you see everything. I do have a tach for sale if you want it.
CivicsSuck 03-31-2003, 09:07 PM How much do you want for it??? Do you have the whole cluster? How much for the whole thing? 91-92 or 93-94 style? How many miles does the odometer read?
NismoSER 03-31-2003, 10:56 PM I have the whole cluster. It is from a '93 NX2000, and the odometer reads 131,000 miles. If you have a 91-92 read no further. Otherwise, you can have the whole cluster for $50 shipped.
CivicsSuck 04-01-2003, 07:27 AM i do have a 91 style. Can you sell just the tach then?? How much if so?
NismoSER 04-01-2003, 09:42 AM The tach from a 93 has a different face. Use car-parts.com to find gauge clusters in junkyards near you.
CivicsSuck 04-01-2003, 10:48 AM Okie Doke, thanks anyways.
Its311Pete 04-01-2003, 12:13 PM Civic I have a tach fro a 91-92 sitting at my house I will part with. I can sell you my whole cluster or the tach.. what ever you need.
CivicsSuck 04-02-2003, 11:27 AM how much do you want for either???
civicdragon 04-03-2003, 01:21 AM wait!!!
before you but a new tach.. check soemthing first!!
On your trans, below the braket that holds the clutch cable there will be a tab ob the trabs housing... there was a black connector on there that bolts to the chassis. I left that off thining its just a wire that connects to nothing. Well my tach worked for a while then it started acting crazy. So i looked at my pictures and tried to see what was wrong. well i connected the wire and the tach works perfectly now... I'll try to post a picture of the wire im talking about tomorrow
CivicsSuck 04-03-2003, 11:05 AM I'll check it out, pics would be great though. Did your tach work fine and then start acting up, or did it act up right from the begining???
CivicsSuck 04-03-2003, 12:12 PM I think I just found the piece in my basement with the rest of the car parts. Is it a black wire about 3/4 of a foot long with a black connector at one end and a eye hook connector at the other end for which you bolt onto the frame????
If so, sweet, but what exactly does this connector plug into that is around the tranny??? I think I can find the hole in the engine compartment that the other end bolts on to, but I need your help as to knowing if this is the correct wire before ripping everything out of the way to get there.
Please help! Thanx.
