How do you tell the differance between the jdm high compression sr20 vs the regular sr20 engine?

You pull off the head and compare pistons.

Wouldnt doing a compression test and comparing data with a stock sr20 comp test #'s work?

Kinda but carbon buildup could make those numbers high.

No.

Compression tests reveal nothing about the statice compression spec of an engine.

Even if they did, there is often close to 10% difference between cylinders and the car is still within factory specs. 9.5:1 vs. 10:1 is close to 5% so there would be no conclusive info from a compression test.
