I was just wondering what the cam switch on an SR20VE sound like? Is it anything like that of the DOHC VTEC motors? I am just asking out of curiosity. I was originally thinking of the JWT C3 cams for road racing but then considering the cost of the valvesprings/ti retainers/ECU/installation ($1900+) and the loss of bottom end torque, I have just decided to go with a VE swap which will give me best of both worlds (especially with the SR16VE cams). Also how much WHP can I expect with a CAI, Header, Cat back, and SR16VE cams?

Dunno, haven't had the pleasure.
Yikes, that is expensive.
170+, no tuning. Prolly more like 180+ with SR16VE cams and tuning.

If you do the SR20VE motor right you can get 186 WHP with bolt ons. I am working on a intake manifold and throttlebody setup for this motor to take the SR20VE into the 191-194 WHP mark. I got together with 98sr20VE to get his car to 186 WHP. He will be the first person to try the manifold out.

Yeah that sounds good Andreas. I was the guy with the bone stock classic at the Saturday meet 2 weeks ago. Whenever I do get the motor you will be doing the swap as well as all the tuning of the motor. Damn the thought of having close to 200WHP on a motor with bolt-ons in my classic is very tempting....... with the extra torque off the line from the SR20 it should leave those Hybrid hatchback boys crapping their pants!

it sounds better than a honda

I dunno I think those B18C5s are hard to beat sound wise. Not to mention they would make more power than a SR20DE would.

I just took a video of my car on the dyno. I haven't done any tuning yet, so the numbers are a bit lower than they should be, but i'm still very happy with the results so far.

Here's a link to the page:

And to the video itself:

And I can't wait. :D

Someone had a video of me at a autocross, You could hear the engine pretty well. Maybe someone will repost that video again.

If you try to listen to TeamNissan third gear on highway or TeamNissan Accelleration on dyno then you can hear it!

I'm excited to see the results! What is your thought/opinion on getting the stock manifold extrude honed coupled with a larger throttle body? How would this compare to your setup (if you're willing to give out any information? If not I understand). I'm guessing even shorter runners and maybe a bigger plenum? Something sorta like an O2 induction manifold but w/ the VE ports and everything?

I've been thinking about extrude honing the IM and getting a bigger TB as another available mod, while the 20v cams (or others a bit more potent than the 16ve ones) are still being tested and whatnot.

Everything you said is 100% correct. Until it is made the final specs wont be know of course. The biggest TB to fit the stock plenum is about 64mm the N1 is a 70mm. We are shooting for the N1 TB with this setup.

the only one I could hear was team nissan dyno. I could hear it at 21seconds quite clearly

Listen closely right around second 12 on my video. It's harder to hear on the video, but it's there.

Here's some movie links of some type r dynos to compare...

Fully built N/A:
http://www.jdmuniverse.com/hybridhatch/webpage/video.html

supercharged type r and N/A built type r on dyno"
http://www.angelfire.com/la2/gents2000/images/dyno.wmv

So there's no confusion-the first one isnt a "type r", it has a ITR swap.

Almost don't care if it is Honda or Nissan! Just CAN'T get enough of that 4 cylinder N/A tuning sound

Yes Carsten, I would agree. I also own a 99 civic w/ a civic type r swap with bolt-ons. mad top end, no torque down low.

Nissan Performance Mag's April issue has part 3 of the VVL install with a dyno video that has a decent sound clip. Listen close enough and you can hear EACH cam kick in. Sounds evil and I like it.

hmm, ive ridden in a bolt on GSR, and couldnt even feel or really hear the cam or manifold switchover at all. maybe the exhaust was too loud? .My civic however, with a really quiet mugen exhaust sounds completely stock until 6k. then it screams till 8600.
