: I'm confused over the O2 sensor

Well, after I did my full exhaust system and saved the cat with the O2 sensor, I am now getting a check engine light. I ran the codes, and sure enough its the rear O2 sensor. Does that mean it has to be replaced? I mean, the whole point of me using the old cat was to have no problems. Also, does anyone know if this effects the car's performance in any way? Does the ECU change the timing? any input would be greatly appreciated.

Did you make sure to connect the ground wire when you put the new exhaust back on. It originally connects on the bolts where the cat connects. I think the rear O2 sensor is for emissions only, i think it will not affect performance--I could be wrong though.

Yes, the ground strap is connected! The ECU was reset, and still nothing.

Did the sensor or cat get dropped, or did anything happen to it while it was out of the car that could have broken it. I can't think of any reason why it would not work with the new exhaust. Mine worked fine after it sat in a box for a year and a half when I put it back on for emissions.

i don't know. the only thing i can think off is that we had to torch the bolts off. but if you consider how hot the exhaust fumes are, i don't see any way how the sensor could have been affected. btw, the light went on about after 13 miles of driving after the install.

Did you ever figure this out?

yeah, i ran the codes for the ECU and it turned out to be my rear O2 sensor. Have no idea why its sending the signal to the ecu, maybe the cat is shot or maybe the sensor is shot, but I really don't care anymore. The car runs like it should and by now I'm accustomed to the ECU light.

I was thinking that if you had to torch off the bolts it might have damaged the sensor. Sure it gets a lot of hot exhaust blowing by it, but it never gets red hot. I think it could be possible for it to have gotten fried. The only problem I see is passing emissions with the engine light on. However, with a 2002 car emissions isn't untill 2007 or somthing. I wouldn't worry about it till then.

Sean

:D :D :D

Yea! That's what you get for having that riced out spec-v!

ahem.. getting back to the topic - drive around for a few days and let the ecu 'learn'. the light should disappear if everything is ok. let us know how it goes!

Do you know if anyone "fingered" the o2 sensor, if so that will do it. I was talking to the muffler guys and they said what ever you do, don't touch the element of the sensor or you screw it all up. Somehow the oils screw with it.

Just second hand info. I would just go ahead and replace that bugger and get over it already.

touch the sensor? i couldn't get the f-ing thing out of the cat. and at this point i don't think there's any way to do it without ruining the cat.
