: Intercool or not intercool
WSSSUP 04-09-2003, 04:23 AM Posted this on Pulsar.org, and Pretty white pointed me back over to this forum....thnx bro.
Anyway just purchased a u13 Bluebird det, still in transit to good old ozz.
I purchased it as an engine package minus the intercooler wihch was roughly 300x200 core size.
This is pretty dam small so after a few talks with car peeps i decided to not worry about the intercooler for now.
Some people on pulsar forums think im mad... just wondering what all you guys thought..
Im looking at 2 to 3 weeks max without an intercooler on so running at 6 or 7 psi wont be a problem.
What you guys think?
Cheers
Bonesss
whitehawk 04-09-2003, 07:51 AM It wont be a problem. Be conservative in setting your timing and run the best gas.

:D
Thrillseeker197 04-09-2003, 11:20 AM i've heard you should run a IC. I wouldn't do it above 5 psi...even if I was to do it.
Serban 04-09-2003, 11:22 AM If you're going to run the TMIC with no hood scoop, it would actually be better to run with no IC, and just get a pipe to go across. Once the IC heats up, it does more bad than good.
AZ WHITE SE-R 04-09-2003, 11:45 AM If it's only gonna be a couple of weeks, just don't boost on it. It might be hard not too, but it is not worth a couple of weeks of fun and ending up with destroyed motor.

Actually it still works a little bit. So I would keep the interheater regaurdless of hood scoop or not, (of course this is observed by the touchy felly test of both sides the IC..........im gonna be installing a hood scoop soon.
bigtom 04-09-2003, 12:17 PM i boost 10 lbs on an sr20de with a gti-r t28 bolted to it with no intercooler at all. it runs fine. i have 370cc injectors and jwt has a ecu program especially for this setup with the timing retarded a little bit above 5500. there is not piping to speakof really and it spools like a champ. it is a myth that you have to have one. i ran a 14.2 @ 102 on street tires with this setup with the stock exaust still bolted on. this was at the idrc firebird nationals just recently in the hot AZ sun. there you have it.
charlie2020 04-09-2003, 12:21 PM Well I run 11psi with no hood scoop and it was 90+ degrees yesturday I believe. ;).
spdracerUT 04-09-2003, 07:32 PM I ran without an IC for a couple months with a t25 and cams running stock boost. You could tell when the motor was getting heat soaked as you could feel the power dropping off. At our flowrates, 7psi is roughly an increase of 70 degrees.
You can do it, just run the highest octance gas you can find and you'll probably want to retard your timing a couple degrees to just be safe. Better to be safe than blow up your brand new motor!

spdracerUT 04-09-2003, 07:34 PM Oh yeah, think about all of those supercharged cars running blowers without IC. Only recently have the supercharger kits started coming with ICs.
charlie2020 04-09-2003, 07:36 PM ........True.................yes retarding the timing a little should be a must.
Rockwood 04-09-2003, 07:46 PM yeah, most blowers are operating at 6 psi, tops. there arent many that are doing more than that, and all that do, come with intercoolers (or aftercoolers, according to back asswards Vortech)
WSSSUP 04-09-2003, 11:42 PM Intercooler will be front mount....
Just need to figure out size on it, as i would like it to sit behind mesh on front bumper. Not really into the hello look at me i have a fmic so i have a turbo.
My car says a little too much anyhow...

CanadianG 04-10-2003, 12:11 AM get a hood like your buddy top mount the bluebird and call it a day
WSSSUP 04-10-2003, 02:23 AM I could always steel his seeing as its just for show....no turbo...
Not after the hood look really.
Who knows...see how it pans out.
Whats a decent size cooler? Ive been told the vr4 coolers are the way to go for a front mount on a pulsar.
