: Compression Check

Okay so for kicks I borrowed my shop's compression tester and tested my motor. Well all cylinders tested at roughly 195 psi, give or take a couple psi. What the heck? I thought it was supposed to be around 175?? I'm willing to admit that the tester is off cause it's old, but off by 20-25 psi?? That seems odd, anyways let me know what you guys think.

Oh yeah, and can a motor burn oil and still have good compression? I'm pretty sure my car goes through a quart per 3000 miles.

Was the motor warm when you did it? Also, how many miles on the engine? You could have carbon buildup which could raise the compression readings I believe.

yes your car can still burn oil and have perfect compression. you could have leaky valve stem seals and that would cause you to burn oil.

i believe its supposed to be in the range of 170-180 or 165-180. not positive but i think thats what the range is

did you open the throttle plate while you were doing the compression test? I thinks theres some weird thing ur supposed to do

engine was warm, throttle was all the way open, and would carbon buildup be consistent across all 4 cylinders? Because all 4 read about the same. I'm going to try and get a different tester and see what's up.

120K miles BTW

That is normal oil consumption, anything over 1qt every 1000 miles is not normal.

I don't know about "normal". Maybe acceptable. Mine hasn't burned any noticeable oil and has been driven hard it's entire life and now has 95k miles with the last 25k boosted. I'd say that even compression across all of the cylinders as a good sign.

Exactly. DOH! Well I'm thinking i'm gonna turbo my current DE until I break something, then install and boost the JDM i bought from BlackMR2. That was kinda my reason for the comp. check.
