: How strong are stock transmissions?

I am going to do a GTi-R swap in the near future, and i plan to run a max of around 250 whp when i take it to the track. Will the stock transmission hold up?

It should, for how long is the question. If you know these cars, you know that their weak link is the transmission. Weak 5th gear, weak 3rd gear, weak everything. I'm very unsure on how much horsepower they'll safely handle, but I've heard 300hp mentioned more than once. Sorry I can't be of much help.

tranny should be alright for you. If you go any higher in HP then you will want to weld the case and cryo the gears up.

Is welding the case something that i can do myself? If not, how much would that, and cryoing the gears cost?

Yup your going to break it! Don't drag until you get the weld at least. If I were you I would get my gears treated. I just broke my 3 rd gear and coolgear and I had to remove fix and install the tranny in 13-17 deg weather. Brrrrrr!
I brought my whole set of gears cryo and shot peened from SR20developement.

My tranny is cryoed/welded by Sr20Development, and it has held up for a LONG TIME, under mucho stress (knock on wood). From dyno pulls (380whp), to street racing, and more than a couple of road racing events (including the Honda vs. Nissa club battle event). I am now running Redline Heavy Shockproof Gear oil (250 weight), and believe this will aid in cushioning the impact to the gears as well.

Bottomline is, I think at 10 psi (approx 250 whp) you will be ok as long as you are not running around town beating on your car like a wild animal. Take it easy out there, shift nicely, and get a laggy turbo :)

When I am running 15-20 psi, I cringe every time i give it full throttle in 3rd/5th gear.

Good luck!
