I see how to remove the ignition lock assembly from the steering column, but I need to remove the lock cyulnder from the assembly and I just don't see how to do that. Does anyone know how to remove the lock cylinder from the ignition assembly? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

You have to remove the whole thing, - are you replacing the key? If so when I ordered a kit from nissan it had that whole ignition assembly that clamps around the steering colum.

My suggestion - get a air muffler gun and go to town, I broke one half off and the other half just rattled loose :-)

ps discconect the battery and wait about 30mins first, don't want the airbag going ka-boom.

I haven't ordered the kit from Nissan. How much did it cost you? Do I need to get the breakaway screws from Nissan, or can I just go to a hardware store and buy regular screws to match the ones I have to drill out?

Once the whole assembly is removed, will I be able to pull the lock cylinder out of the assembly? I was hoping to be able to take it to a locksmith to be fixed. If I could just remove the lock cylinder without removing the whole assembly from the steering column, that would be better.

Thanks,
Ben

Ya, you have to replace the whole thing IIRC, either that or the orginal clamp thing has some speciality fittings to keep you from getting at the cylinder.

Also - nissan doesn't provide breakaway screws with the new kits, instead a nut/bolt kit.

Finally, my kit was in the mid 200's, but it was for a '93nx2000, and they changed the locks in '93 :-( so it was the only year it was good for, I think 91-92's were cheaper.

Argh.... So, without ordering the kit or removing the whole assembly, could a locksmith repair the lock?

How can I hotwire my car and bypass the lock? I know this is a stupid question, but I just want to make this car last me until I buy a new one. I am trying not to spend any more money on it.

Thanks,
Ben
