so to close out my eventful week (wing getting stolen, trunk getting fucked up, knock in the motor) i was going to the body shop 3 hrs away. at about 2.5 hrs i have no power and a very loud bang bang bang then the car coasts to a stop. so the motor is gone. now here is the good news i need a det a 5 speed like now i have a budget of 3 grand to get this done labor is free. where is the best place to buy this stuff. i looked on jgy and got a price on a bb and gtir. if im going to upgrade the turbo later do i need the gtir? as far as a tranny goes i need a preferably a built one but any one will do. then as engine managment goes can i use the ecu from the det? i ask this because i have an auto 97 ser. or what else can i do. please give me some advice chris
the good part is im getting some go for my *** hehehehehehe

Call Jason at JGY Monday and he can get you all of the prices including shipping. Good luck. I wouldn't do a GTI-R because of the difficulty of the swap.
Damn bro, sorry to hear about this. Well time for bigger and better things. Ok, you have a couple of choices as I see it. I'll get to them. First the necessities. You need to get the stuff to convert it to a manual tranny. I for one don't know all the parts that are needed but I would think that the list is rather extensive. Considering you're going to need a flywheel and clutch. I would run a OEM flywheel with some type of aftermarket clutch.
Now on to the motor aspect. Of which I know a little bit more about. There's a few routes that you can take.
1: JDM SR20DE with a bolt on turbo. A lot of the guys around here have been getting awesome results with this. In some aspects some say it's cheaper.
2: SR20DET out of a Pulsar GTiR. Pimp setup IMHO. More HP out of the box. A bit more difficult to install. Just a bit:) The downfall to this setup IMHO is that the parts from this motor are not interchangeable with the USDM SR20DE. I.E. Cams, alternator.
3: SR20DET out of a Blue Bird (BB around here:D ) This is the route that I have chosen. Now there's actually a couple different models in this route. You have the older version which comes with a top mount interheater;) that is what I have purchased. Reason for that being is so I can reduce costs up front. And get a FMIC setup down the road. Or you can get the newer version which comes with a better turbo manifold, turbo, and a bit more HP out of the box. But with this you must buy a front mount. Or I believe Charlie is running a top mount from an older motor on his newer motor.
Now whatever you choose you need to keep shipping costs in mind. That's the bummer of it all. There was a guy who posted some older DET's in the classifieds who is in south Florida. $1300 IIRC. That's not including shipping though. Or you could go with someone closer who is slightly more expensive. JGY is a great guy to deal with, and has been an awesome resource to the SR community.
Last but not least you need to keep in mind a few other things. Engine management, Exhaust, Downpipe, Gauges, and the 100 other little things that pop up. The entire process does get a bit overwhealming at times, but if you ask the guys who have done it. (at least the one's I've talked to) They will tell you time, and time again. It's worth it.

There is going to have to be some custom wiring if he goes the Gti-r route. Also, I am assuming he wants to keep his auto., if he doesn't then he would have to change the wiring and more. If this was the case I would still choose a DET because of the ease of installation compared to a Gti-r. That is why I said to call Jason. He will help get him straight and a good deal at that. I would also say Andreas, but shipping would be more for him.

For the record a GTiR, and BB are both DET's. Just trying to keep it clear.

i am changing the auto out. i have purchased the conversion pieces from maiblugride i am just waiting for them to come in. jgy can get me eveything i need? anybody know him so i can get a better deal? like i said before i have 3 grand. that is it before i dont even need a car anymore (my girl will kill me seriously) cause i would be dead. i have read about the manual swap it doesnt "seem" that bad. matt r u using the top mount on the top? what kind of managment do i need? thanx chris
Yes I will be using the top mount for the time being. It's not the most efficent way, but it will work for low boost apps.
As for engine management. I recommend JWT. Nothing like plug, and play. But my concern is that your computer is for an Automatic. I'm pretty sure there is something different between the two. You might want to check with JWT on that one. The guys there are very helpful when they're not completely swamped.
