Well, i went to Firebird raceway tonight up in Phoenix. I just got done driving 120 miles or so to get there so the car was rather heatsoaked, to say the least. I went straight to run one run, because there was no line (i was the 7th car there, only about 15 showed up all night). I ran a 15.2xx @92.99mph w/ a 2.5xx 60ft (wheelspin sucks). corrected that's about 15.0 @ 94.1mph SLOW! I let the car cool off for about 30 minutes or so and mess with my AGX's. Went back to go try again. More traction problems. (coupled with printer problems for them - no timeslips) ran a 15.1 @93.4xx and then a 15.01 @ 93.xx mph - thought it was about 93.5xx. but of course no printout. 60ft still horrible 2.4xx and that's with hitting the rev limiter in first too, oops. I suck at going straight. corrected to about 14.82 @ 94.6mph. After that run they closed the track due to computer problems and i got a raincheck and can go back for free some other time. I guess this goes to show that G20's are heavy, my motor definitely has a lot of room for improvement, and i suck at going straight. :) Oh yeah, it's 1100ft in elevation there, it was about 75 degrees outside, and about 40-50% humidity (maybe even higher). I only corrected for altitude.

Oh yeah, what do Spec V's normally run? There were 2 or 3 there, they were running mid 15's @ 87-88mph - with mods (CAI at least, not sure what else). Stock WRX was running 14.6's at 92-93mph. And a bunch of slow ass civics and stuff, some had swaps, but nothing was really that quick. Although there were very few cars there too.

Did you get to weight the car with you in it that day? Drag Racing is all about percision and it sounds like you need to get used to this new engine. I did a 14.8 at 95mph the first time out with my car. It had some issues so I dont really know if it was me or the car. My car is lighter then yours.

Hey Justin,

Most important of all is that you had fun! :)

You just need to learn the new engine (and tires) and learn when it has the best launch rpm/Nm.

You guys be happy that you got these tracks! Here in Denmark we have to do it on the streets at night!! No fun! Haven't been there the last 10 years, but many people come there every Friday and Saturday night! :)

But our cars G20's are pretty heavy! I haven't had time to get any quarter mile runs yet, but as soon as I do I will post my time so you can compare them! :)

They never opened the scales last night, they were barely open an hour total, due to computer problems. When i weighed my car and cornerbalanced it, it weighed in at 2695 w/o driver in the car. I figure last night it would have probably been around 2650-2675 (plus my 175lbs) as i pulled the jack and spare out of the car and had a little under a 1/2 tank (what I had when i corner weighted it). I was really hoping to get more runs in, as it would only cool off more throughout the night, and i'd be able to figure out my launches a bit better. Hell, i cut 3 tenths off of my first run, in just 3 runs. I know the car has a solid 14 in it as is, I just need to not suck to get there. :p

Then again, i now have the nismo FPR, so i could tune that and see what a test pipe does, dyno those and then head back in a few weeks.

What are your shift points? According to cartest your car should be good for 14.3-14.6s @ 95-97mph with around 175whp. It just takes practice to get good runs in. HOwever I'd recommend just running slicks at the drag strip. Alot of people run race tires to the AutoX and road coarse, why waste time running street tires at the drag strip? Some slicks will do ya good :D ;) .

Thank, yeah that's about what i was expecting, but maybe next time.... Environmental conditions also play a large factor in how you run too. Phoenix isn't the best due to the heat and it's a bit higher than the drag strips in CA and FL where people usually run great times. I'd buy slicks, but i don't go drag racing often. This is the first time i've gone in well over 6 months, probably more like 8 or 9. I go maybe twice a year, just to see how the car does after a couple new mods. I'd like to get a set of slicks, but i feel my money is better spend on race tires for the track (instead of my azenis) and set of race pads too. :)

thanks!

according to autotrader.com a 92 G20 weighed in at a whopping 2530lbs, so i dunno whats up with that...

94-95 mph traps are good for 14.5-14.4
try to get a 2.3-2.2 60' next time:)

Even with cloth seats and no sunroof, I find that weight very hard to believe. 2700 is a much more reasonable weight, with A/T transaxles and power options 2900 lbs isn't an uncommon street weight.

I can tell you for a fact you'll never see a stock G20 weigh that much. Mine is the lightest configuration sold (5-spd, cloth seats, no moonroof, etc...) and when i corner weighted it (in stock trim w/ jack, spare, etc..) it weighed in at 2695 and that's the lightest I've seen a G20 weigh that hasn't had any major weight savings. The P10 touring models are quite a bit heavier and the p11's are even heavier than those.

And I was hoping to get better 60fts, believe me. Last time out I was cutting low 2.3's, but the track was a lot better that night. Oh well, I really don't care all that much about going in a straight line anyways, turning is more fun. :D

yeah, i noticed that pheonix was a bit slower than the SD tracks. what did you run in your DE for comparison's sake?

try slipping the clutch a little more on launch, dont just drop it, with the stocker ULSD and the increased TQ of the VVL, it is just a recipe for a tire fire. i would try a little more RPM that you are using now and slipping the clutch for the 1st bit of engagement. works best for me, i hit a 14.9@94 in my SE-R with CAI, header, cams, ECU, 2.1 60' of course, this was after the LSD, best 60' i had on ULSD was a 2.3. i noticed firebird has a MUCH better prepped surface, so you should be able to improve on that a little.

maybe you should come out here to our ghetto carlsbad, the launch pad is nice, the rest of the track sucks, but at least its sea level, shit. :D

I don't have LSD for one (sucks even more coming out of corners now). The track's elevation is about 1100ft, so that's roughly 2 tenths or so. I went on a Thursday night (import only night) and the track wasn't that well prepped, compared to what it's been in the past. With my other motor I ran a 15.4 @ 91.5 w/ a 2.4 60ft, before S3's (143whp in this setup). But that was at the track up north (Speedworld in NW Phoenix) and that track runs a hair faster mph wise. Either way 93.xx seemed slow, I would have run that mph with the S3's considering i ran almost 92mph w/o them, but maybe it was due to the temps and my lack of being able to hook up. I would spin them at the top of first and again shifting into second, and would either chirp, or slightly spin 3rd depending on how smooth I shifted.
Guess I should just go out and buy a G20t tranny and throw a quaife in it and be done with traction problems.... anyone want to sponsor my car? :D

Greg V sells a Nismo Diff that Mike K likes more than the Quaife that is cheaper and fits in your ULSD tranny. (i know you have no LSD btw, hence the ULSD, UnLimited Slip Diff)

your MPH does sound low, but maybe it the no traction and elevation. from what i saw, most SE-R guys have been running 3 mph slower there, at least the higher powered ones.

DOH! Sorry, yeah i couldn't tell if that was a U or a V. Looking at it now it's definitely a U. oops.
I read Mike's write-up on the NISMO unit, that looks promising too.
Also, I have a G-tech Pro, just no place to use it at the moment. That could be helpful too....

Crap, hit the wrong button... can someone erase this post... sorry. I tried but it wouldn't let me. Thanks.
