: reversing MAF

ok, here is another question (seems like i am full of them today..)
a LONG time ago, on the main list, there was talk of actually reversing the MAF in the intake tract. meaning, take it out, and rotate it end for end. something about one end being larger..etc.
well, today, i took mine apart to clean the wires and got to thinking..since the air hole for the MAF wires to read only has one side (they are next to that 1/4" or so hole, and then there is a slit in the other side of the MAF for the air to pass through) wouldn't it make a difference to the MAF if air was directly hitting those wires or not, or do you guys think this is not a problem. its been so long now, i don't know if i had it reversed or not...so i would assume the side with the hole going to the wires is next to the filter, and the slit side is going towards the manifold. my thought would be that if this was reversed and air was trying to go through the slit instead of hitting the wires directly (since the slit is kinda out of the way of the main airflow) that it would take more air to cool the wires, which kinda tricks the ECU into thinking there is less air then there really is.

my brain hurts...

So far on the "main list", the SE-R mailing list, it looks like people do not think this will make much of a difference. Even Mike Kojima chimed in with a simple "Dont do that, it won't work". But hey Alex, give it a try the next time you are at the dyno and let us know what you discover.

yea, i never did it after i read about it those years back. it must have been stuck in my head, and i must have thought i had done it after all this time..'casue my MAF was in there right. I did clean my MAF wires for the first time EVER yesterday..one of them had a black side..
I would think everyone on the list is right..it would lean the car out..probably not good.

Nope. You turn the MAF 180*. The ideas is that you get better air flow all the way to the TB.

Rotating 180 degrees it helps a little, reversing it so the back is now the front will absolutly not work at all.

Mike

i knew i remembered reading in there that rotating it was a decent idea. thanks mike for clearing that up
