: Rust Repair?

I've got some bubbling on the paint in front of the passenger side rear tire, on body panel, on the bottom. I don't want to paint it, but I don't have $$$ to get it repaired right now, what should I do? Should I sand it down? Help!

Well, you're not in a rust belt, so it's probably ok to leave it until you have the cash to fix it.

If there's exposed paintless metal, you could spray it with an oil spray, or coat it with grease to keep the moisture out, which will prevent it from getting worse.

Eventually you should have it fixed by a body shop.

Man, I wish I had a camera to take pictures of how I removed rust from my trunk lid. That would have helped you understand what you need to do. If you have rust in the areas you mentioned, definitely sand it down. When you have completely removed all the rust/paint, spray at least 2 coats of primer. Wait for the primer to dry, and then spray paint (got myself a spray can from autozone, and it was a perfect color match). Worked great for me, should be great for you too! this won't cost you much and will take care of your rust issues. Hope this helps.

I'm a little nervous about doing it, but I guess if I screw it up real bad I can have a body shop fix it. At least I could stop the rust from getting any worse.

Should I just get some sandpaper and go at it? What grit? You can't really see the problem unless you get underneath the car (sort of) so hopefully it won't be an eye sore.

I am about to buy a SE-R with rust in the same spot, just above the rear bumper on the drivers side rear fender

How much would something like that cost to repair? the correct way

Ok I found this place online, think I might contact them.

It's a bit of a hull but if they can save my SE-R then so be it

it is at least worth looking into

Rocker panels can be replaced they are welded to the car and have to removed and put back on. Most of the problems with them are that they are hollow and sometimes moisture gets trapped in them and they start to rust out. My guess is somewhere's around $500 to get both replaced. I "think" this is what a couple older car guys told me what these usually run to replace on older vehicles.

Holy batman

went to a body shop today, finally found one that would fix rust, I was quoted $90 to cut out the rust, weld in new metal, seal the inside of the fender, then use body putty and fiberglass on the new metal, prime, and paint(not the orginal color just a close match untill i get the car repainted)

Dirt cheap, I could not beleive the price

That is really cheap. Lucky you. I was quoted ~$200. Go figure why I said a pretty penny.

I think it's cheap for a reason. I'd ask more questions. Unless you know the party who is going to fix it, I'd get another estimate on it. Cutting out sheet metal and then reforming new metal isn't an easy task. Then trying to blend it, fill, sand, prime, paint. $90? The guy must be willing to do it as at a loss. Or, he is starving for money and will cut corners.

Trust me, you want to be sure it's done perfectly or it will come back. Heck, even then it will probably come back. Rust is very nasty and something that is rarely cured, permanetly.

well he seems ok, it's just a small 4 car shop he runs out of his house. I found him by talking to another body shop. He gave me the impression that he does this b/c he enjoys it. Heck he even knew the typical rust spots on the car(rocker panels, inside the front fenders). He also cold tell the car had been hit before from accross the street(something even I did not know, but he pointed out paint lines and cold tell where the panel had been repaired). So I think he is cool, if I was getting him to paint match the spot after the fix then the price would have been like $150. But we will see, can't hurt to look around

Good lord, for another $60 why wouldn't you have him paint match everything? That's an incredible deal. Jump on it and just hope he does good work!

Good luck!

The rocker panels on my car are rusted, the back part by the tire is just about rotted all out.. i had it on a lift doing a clutch job and it started to sink into the panel.. so its pretty bad... body shop wanted $1,000 to fix it... I'm hoping to find something else alot cheaper.. any suggestions?
