Does anyone know where i can get a SR20VET (out of a forgein X-Trail) in NZ or Aust and does anyone know anything about the gearboxes.

It only comes with an electrobnically controlled 4 wheel drive gearbox and drivtrain.

What is more, sensors in the gearbox interface with the ECU to control fuel, ignition and boost pressure. Highly unlikely you will be able to put it in anything else but an X_TRAIL.

Cheers for the reply.

To give you a bit more info. I'm putting it in a purpose built highspeed offroad truck (ute). Basically a roll cage on wheels with big suspension and fibre glass panels covering the frame.

We can as another option, marry that motor with another gearbox by building an adaptor plate, and also use an aftermarket race computer such as a LINK.

But i would still like any info on both the motor and gearbox so i can compare with another option i am looking at.

Is the gearbox manual or auto?

Cheers,

Justin

Pretty sure all X-Trail VET's are mated to auto boxes...but I think they can hook up to the SR series of gearboxes, so if you wanted 4wd it could hook up to a GTi-R box (not THAT strong though)

I think that the AWD autobox that comes with the VET is a continuously variable type transmission. This means you do not shift* like a normal 5/6 speed (you can, but it is computer controlled and you just push a button to "shift" through pre-set transmission ratios). (a chain/belt rides on 2 cone shaped "gears" and changes the gear ratio by moving the belt/chain along the cone gears). This is a great idea and will keep your motor at its optimum performance level (rpm) while accellerating. If you really need the VVL head, it would be cheaper to get some low compression slugs for an SR20VE and slap a turbo on it. (or if you can find the VVL head, bolt it onto the 8.5 or 9.5:1 DE block and turbo it.) Does the motor have to be a Nissan motor? You might want to do some research on toyota 4AGE's. They are 1.6 liters, but you can pull serious power out of them. Plus, they are WAY cheaper than SR20VE/DET/VET motors. A 4AGE 20V Quad Throttle Body head on a 4AGZE block boosted @ 25 psi (stock bottom end - stock head - stock tb's - just need some BIG injectors) lays close to 380 HP (oh, and it will cost less that the sr20ve). Put that in your SR20 and smoke it.

I'm trying to go for something thats std but gives good horsepower and alot of Torque.

I've seen guys get std motors add turbo's and this and that etc etc and they don't seem to finish races, there's always something that goes wrong (maybe it's these guys don't know what they are doing).

What you say is all good advice (and thats what i'm after), but in offroad racing the motors, gearboxes (especially) , and diffs take an absolute pounding. I've found by experience the more std the more reliable.

The races we compete in are similar to the Baja but not as hot and range from 5k shortcourse to the 100-1000km Endurance races.

In the class of offroad truck i race the motors are limited to 2L Turbo or 4.3L NA. The two i am looking at are SR20VET out of the X-Trail or the Mitsubishi 6G74 3.5L Quadcam V6 24valve Mivec out of a Pajero/Montero.

I'm interested in any feedback etc etc.

What about a Nissan 4.1ltr n/a V8, I think they are good for 206kw @ flywheel (275bhp).

Unfortunatley we are also limited to 4 or 6 cylinders. Otherwise i would run an older toyota 5V single cam V8, they have plenty of torque and you don't have to wait to 4000 revs before it gets up go's like the later quad cam V8's.

If you're after a strong 2litre turbo four with lots of torque you may find a Mitsubishi 4g63bt(out of an evo lancer) easier to pick up and would be heaps cheaper and has a tough as nails 4wd 5spd g/box and cheap parts...

Cheers for that, I'll definetly look into it.

I didnt realise you had to stay with either 4 0r 6 cylinder. What class are you wanting to get into. I know of a few trucks that were getting built with toyota v8 (my father was building one actually, but no longer) (and still got the engine if you want one too with bigger sump made etc.) Other trucks i know that do very well is lyndsey dowler's 3sgte powered toyota hilux.
Also my father is the agent for aus shock here in new zealand so if you want some off road coilover shocks let me know.

speaking of high torque, have you heard about the new vw 4wd, using v10 twin turbo and diesel it produces 770nm of torque, now that would russel a few feathers in the off road scene.

email shortz@ihug.co.nz if you want any details for anything

Dont know if he hangs out much here these days. A little bird told me he has one of only 2 N1's in NZ...... Are you in NZ?

Hmmm, i dont think Dan had an N1, But Barry does, Bazza1600 on other forums

But maybe dan did, I cant say yay or nay.

But did I read correctly? Did someone want to change a VZr to an SR20DET?

Im sorry, but No, please dont!

get a GTI and do the swap, but the VzR is by far a lotless ahssle, and spend the $$ you would on theswap, and see how ya go then.

Bye Bye CIVIC!

i dont know if im welsome since i dont live in NZ, but i say you just go with a pulsar GTI-R motor or Bluebird motor if you are going for AWD. The NEO VVL is not really necessary to make horsepower. just some strong sr20 internals and a lot of boost.

like you said, its more reliable if you keep it simple. look at my setup, i have the pulsar manifold on a n/a sr20de with the pulsar gtir t28. i will be around 300 horsepower(dont know metric, but its more than a VET) at 1bar boost when im finished. if you used a bigger turbo, it would get you a lot farther, you could go up to twice what a VET makes on stock internals.

but you have it right, keep it simple, like a GTI-R AWD transmission mated to some sort of turbo sr20, just up the boost a little and you will make all the power you need.

But how long has he he had this little thing?

LUcky Bas^^^^!!!

im guessing if he hasnt had it long, it will still befilled with crap, like most imports.

I think once he invested some hard earned, serious cash (read, another $39.95 repco filter :D ) he may start scaring you again

Man i wanna N14 version, but saying that, When i pushed Moynies N15, it felt very light, anybody know the weight of an N14 3door and an N15 3 door?

sorry for Hijack
