SR20VE Installation FAQ: Read This First!

How difficult is installing a VE?
In a B13 I the install should be similar to that of a B14 with the only exception being the wiring of the distributor and ignition coil. Hopefully someone will provide the specific wiring instructions for a B13 and we will append the FAQ.

In a B14 the install is very straightforward. The only additional changes necessary are rewiring the distributor and one additional 2-wire harness. You also need to wire the two VVL solenoids. Instructions for wiring the distributor can be found here (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22714). Information about RPM triggers can be found here (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=35830) and here (http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?t=53503). Most of this information applies to all cars wiring up the VVL.

For a discussion on installing a VE into your b13 click here ( http://www.sr20forum.com/showthread.php?t=60221).

The DE transmission bolts right onto the VE. In fact many of the DE items are a direct VE bolt on. They share the same block design.

Steve Foltz, aka "98sr20ve (http://www.sr20deforum.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=1549)", created a fantastic install resource with pictures of installation in his '98 SE which you can view here (http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4291534383).

For a discussion on using the VE ecu click here (http://www.sr20deforum.com/showthread.php?t=58862). It's not the final word but it gets you started.

Anything I have left out you would like to see added to the FAQ??

FYI, i used the yellow/red wire right off the ECU (4th one from the bolt, not right next to it) for the RPM wire of my GReddy MSS. this made it so i wouldnt have to run a wire all the way into the engine bay.

In my B13, I had no luck taking the RPM signal for my MSS from the yellow/red wire attached to ECU Pin #3. Nor did the yellow/green underhood wire work. Both gave unreliable signals that allowed the high cams to turn off at high RPM when the MSS "thought" that the RPMs had dropped below hte trigger point.

What worked for me was Pin #2 -- a blue wire with a black stipe right next to the yellow/red wire described by Steve. For details see

I know this is a little old and I tried the search feature but I cant find what I am looking for.

I need the experts in this forum to point me to a thread that talks about installing a VE into a NX2000.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks !

hi guys,

newbie here. i have 92 4 door sentra with a ga16de engine. would like to swap a sr20ve engine. 2 questions.

1. how do i know it's a ve engine? the mechanic said it's a sr20ve engine. the valve cover is red but with out the neo vvl sticker on it. it comes complete with manual transmission and computer box.

2. if this is an sr20ve engine and i buy it, how easy or difficult is it install in my car.

thanks.

1. there are two solenoids on the driver side of the engine.

Easy to swap if an SE-R, you'll need to do some additional wiring if a ga car- not for the cams but for some of the other stuff. You'll also need a different ecu, and I don't know how that conversion is going to work. If I were you I'd be REAL tempted to keep your eyes open for an SE-R with a busted motor and go from there rather than try to face the challenges of a ga16 to VE conversion. It's interesting enough just with the SE-R. VE's to my knowledge ALL have the "Neo VVL" CAST onto the valve cover. I'd say there's a really good chance that either (1) you're getting taken for a ride by this guy or (2) he's an idiot. In either case my hunch is you need to walk away from that shop and NEVER look back.

The NeoVVL emblem is removable. NinetyNineSEL removed his for aesthetic reasons, and for inspection reasons too I believe.

thanks tiden. thanks jerryeads. will inspect the engine for the 2 solenoids first. the guy said i'll nead new harness/wiring but it comes with the ecu and transmission.

Wups, didn't notice you were there; SE-Rs may not grow on trees there anymore than here. Sorry; looked again; Taiden, you're quite correct, it's a 'sticker'. Romaq, IF it's a VE (and why would a wrench in the Phillipines remove the sticker??), do your homework before you wade into a swap to the ga16 car. There are likely folks here who can help you through that; sorry not to be one of them!

thanks taiden. will keep that in mind. anyway you're just an email and a phone call away if i need some help.

thanks jerryeads. i sure will do my homework 1st before i plunge into it. that's true, why would a wrench take off the vvl engine. but do sr20de's come in painted valve covers. oh well. i guess i'll just look for the 2 solenoids.

thanks again guys. :)

Yes, different de motors do come with different color (but mainly black or red, methinks) vc's. My VE is black, and I know it to have been untouched. But the solenoids are the key, sitting just behind the distributor. Go to the install threads here and I think you'll see some pretty clear pics of what you're looking for. If it is a VE and you decide to try this, Andreas Miko is the renowned expert on the forum. If he doesn't know what you're going to run into trying this with a 1.6 car, it's possible but not likely anyone else does. Have you searched the forum for a successful 1.6 swap?

jerryeads.. yes. tried searching. info are very good! at this point 2 solenoids make a ve vd de. i think i even read a post of somebody having a 4door b13 like mine. but at this time, knowing what a ve looks like is my concern. am about 80% sure of doing this project. will keep you posted.

thanks again. warm regards.
