The New Zealand Four (six) and Rotary Nationals were on this past weekend in Auckland New Zealand at Meremere Drag strip. This is basically the biggest import drag meet of the year, and in previous years there has been over 30000 people, and 300 cars entered. This year may have been a little bit down on numbers becasue of problems in the past with the fact the venue is on the main state highway 1, and traffic problems have caused major disruptions, which have always made more media than the event it self.

But this year was good. We went on Saturday afternoon and camped the night, got the cars thru scrutineering on sat, so were all ready for the morning. The public were allowed to ocamp overnight as well to save on traffic conjestion in the morning, but fortunatly this year they were put over the other side of a rather large hill that backs on to the strip, so it was nice and quiet in the pits, if you dont count doof doof going util 4am, and rotors showing of thier bridge ports cruising up and dwon all night! Also when they opend the gates the next day, they fenced off the pits and the left side of the track from the riff raff, so spectating was excellent for those with a pass, the other side of the track has the big hill, so room isnt really an isssue over there. Theres nothing worse than trying to get into the staging lanes and finding its full of piss heads standing in the lanes.

Race was excellent, classes were for Turbo 4wd, Turbo 2wd Street, Turbo 2wd Pro Street (For stripped out road legal cars running dot slicks), All motor, All motor Pro street(same as above), Rotories, Turbo Rotories, DYO, and Pro Import( the big boys).

I was in Turbo 2wd Street, and apart from having to get a couple of cars running hoosiers and mickey thompsons out of the class, managed to win against a field of Skylines, GT Starlets, A couple of early FWD Mitzis with VR4 engines, and a couple of turbo Corrollas. Best time was 12.789 @ 185 kph, with a 2.090 60 foot. The track had been VHT'd, which is the first time I have run on one, but there was a couple of oil downs during the day, so it could have been better. I was running Toyo RA1 tires 225 60 15, which are basically a circuit tire, but are fully road legal. Was good to run some 12s, as it has been stuck in the low 13s for a while.

Can still hold my head highto say that I have never been beaten by a Skyline, be it a r32 rb20det, or r33 rb25det, running street rubber!
