So my NX has just hit 231 K KM, thats about 144 K miles for you southern boys. I am curious, it has been suggested to have the valves reset, as through out the age of the vehicle, the timming on the opening and closing of these babbies can become less then perfect. Its been said that this will restore lost power and efficientcy ?

However, being that I know very little about mechanics, I have no idea how to do this. So i'll probably bring to the nissan and let them deal with it. But something tells me that I'll be walking away with a wallet half as heavy.

How do I know when this needs to be done? She drives fine, I'm still finding pickup is adequete in upper band, but is this preventative maintance worth working on ? What is the approx cost? Let me guess, I need new parts?

Any Advice is welcomed.

Our cars have what is called Hydraulic Lash Adjusters or HLA's. They do the valve adjustment on their own. When you get a valve job, stem height is measured and there are appropriate shims on the top of the retainers that allow the rocker arm to sit straight and not on an angle. The HLA's sit on the back of the rocker arm and adjusts valve seating, if they're good you're good. It's not a mechanical drivetrain. IF you're anal, maybe you could get them replaced, a valve job, and the stem heights checked and a shimming done. BUT it's just cheaper to get a used JDM motor than all that work.
