: MSD Coils
Sabre 200 Gxi 07-11-2004, 10:53 AM Any of you guys using the MSD Blaster coils? Saw the dyno for a Vtec and before and after had a 8whp gain and 14nm of torque gains!!
My coil is electronic and only has the 4 spark plug leads coming out of it. Where is my coil????
redflores3 07-11-2004, 11:43 PM hate to tell you this but
no 8hp gain with msd coil unless you are turbocharged it will help you a lot.
and all coils are electronic just hold pull one of the wires comming out of the cap
while the engine is running....
so you have an internal coil....
Sabre 200 Gxi 07-12-2004, 12:16 AM My distributor doesn't have a rotor and stuff... Some of the older models here have it.
If I have an internal coil like you say, then where abuot is it and how do I wire up the MSD coil to it.
As for the 8whp, that's the before and after reading on the honda vtec.... seems worth it to me even if it only gives 5 hp....
drummer4lifex 07-12-2004, 01:43 AM MSD is useless for sr20s unless your engine is modded to hell. Bolt-ons don't ever max out the stock ignition or fuel systems.
Sabre 200 Gxi 07-12-2004, 01:50 AM Not even at high rpm?
I take it the reason for the honda's increases are due to a wack stock ignition system then??

Correct. Save your money for something else.
2nd Runner 07-12-2004, 10:19 AM I am planning on going Turbo next month...the MSD will help me in what way? Try not to flame me I am learning as I go :)

I'm not sure about going turbo - but most turbo setups I've seen have not had MSD coils. I *think* that you only need one if you start running high boost and you are looking for big power. I guess what I'm saying is that it should be one of the last mods you do to your setup because there are so many other things that will add more power before worrying about ignition.
Dave Deen 07-12-2004, 11:29 AM i got about 30km more on half tank with the blaster ss
only reason i bought it cause i got it at a real good deal

You get better gas milage with the MSD? This is news to me. Did you buy it recently, or how long have you had it? I haven't even bothered looking into the price of a coil, but if it isn't too expensive, it might pay for itself over time with savings in gas milage.
Dave Deen 07-12-2004, 12:21 PM I was going to nos the ga16 and then sold the kit and did a swap
had a 6a with regulator from the nos install 1st time and just ran them back when i installed the sr.
i have it installed about 1 1/2 yrs now and keeping the pressure where it was, just installed and went from 240km or so to 276 km to the half tank, where i normally fill with the same kind of driving and traffic situation for the week.
i play with fuel pressure and fire since this is what makes power.
was able to drop 2/10 with widened gap and higher psi
just remember the widened gap reduces coil life.
i believe the price is about $35 or so.

How long do you think the coil would last with that gap? This is very interesting info to read, btw.
Dave Deen 07-12-2004, 12:53 PM no idea really, i just open the gap when i going to race and use the 1.1mm for normal use.
this is just what i was told about the shorter coil life with open gap.
i suspect with a some better flowing heads some more power could be made as one member once told me when he did some work on the engine and needed some fuel and added fire to the combination and got the results he wanted on the dyno
BTW this is on a ga16
SE-R_Tj 07-12-2004, 02:50 PM what about if you are using nitrous, sprayin a 125 shot? will it help me???
Dave Deen 07-12-2004, 02:54 PM after 50hp shot i believe u need some fuel and ignition assistance and yes it will help
the hvc lines are better but a bit more pricey too
