: S13 - Phase I Complete
Rittmeister 07-25-2004, 03:24 PM Well, the S13 project is off to a flying start.
End of day 1:

The fluids are drained, AC and PS detached and hanging in the engine bay, most of the harness disconnected.
Day 1's pile of shame:

Day 2 begins with us taking an inordinate amount of time to remove the exhaust. Damn rusted cat bolts:

Poorly lit pic of Saaby and my buddy Josh with the engine ready to come out:

Dirty engine bay:

This week will be spent cleaning the bay, installing the new power-steering hardware, fitting the intercooler, exhaust, and radiator, and whatever other loose ends need to be tied up. I should have an engine by mid-week if my supplier gets their a$$ in gear, so hopefully next Friday will be the day we start to stick the new engine in.
Many thanks to Saaby, 2xSE-R (Charlie) and my friend Josh for all their help so far.
SR20steve 07-25-2004, 03:34 PM Looks hella fun! I need a project like that.
skyliner 07-25-2004, 05:08 PM Best place for that single cam, is buried deep under ground............then covered with concrete. What are you doing, SR/RB/CA?
Travis E.
nissanoholic 07-25-2004, 05:14 PM now thats how u do it, i hate it when people do sil 80 conversions on the hatch back style 240's, that'll look hella good when done!
nizzan4u2nv 07-25-2004, 05:22 PM Good work. Looks like a fun project.
SERprise In WV 07-25-2004, 11:41 PM Looking good, Kentmeister.
When I buy a 240, you can do it all over again. :)
gottabfast 07-25-2004, 11:45 PM hey do you have a place for the engine? I might be interested...I'm looking for a spare for our race car...on the flanges for the cat, nobody in Dayton has them. They have to be ordered in Packs of 10, but I may have a shop that has them tomorrow north of town, where I work. I'll call you tomorrow to see if you still need them.
Rittmeister 07-26-2004, 08:39 AM gottabfast, I still need them. I'm going to approach my engine dealer about fabbing some, they do a lot of that.
I would LOVE to get rid of the engine, I haven't even tried to sell it. The tranny may or may not be spoken for. Shoot me an offer on the motor and whatever else you want; just be aware that I'll be holding on to it until the new engine is in and running.
Skyliner, the car is getting the mighty SR20DET. I thought about CA/RB (both cheaper, at least the RB20) but the CA isn't getting any younger and the RB still requires quite a bit of custom work, so SR it is.
Greg, you bet. Love to help.
Serban 07-26-2004, 08:45 AM Once that car is painted and boosted, its gonna be one bad ass car, keep up the good work Kent :)
gottabfast 07-26-2004, 09:07 AM You may want to look into some different types of clamps for a cat. If you ever want to take it to a track you can get quick release clamps so you can swap in a test pipe. I'm gonna call the shop in a few minutes to see if they have them and when I can pick them up. I have no idea what to offer you on the engine, but if the tranny is spoken for that's fine and the racecar isn't going anywhere for a while so I'm in no hurry there. I'll PM you about the motor later today.
2xSE-R 07-26-2004, 11:23 AM Met another forum member (saaby), beat on cat bolts for a while, had some pizza ...... all around good time. Just wish I could have stayed for the last hour and a half. All issues that prevented me from bringing my classic will be resolved this weekend, so from now on I should be good to stay as long as I'd like. :biggthump
Rittmeister 07-26-2004, 03:00 PM gottabfast, I thought about clamps, but both the cat-back and the downpipe are nice stainless pieces with flanges welded on. The only clamps I've ever seen can only mate pipe-to-pipe, so to speak. I'm not willing to cut up the cat-back or DP.
On the motor/tranny, I'll wait to hear from you via PM. The guy who wants the tranny may not really be ready to move on it anyway.
evilsr20degg 07-26-2004, 03:03 PM looks like my project. just mine isnt moving till i get a clip.

Good idea. From experience when you start hacking stuff it rusts a lot quicker. Especially in the frickin' state.
SE-Rican 07-26-2004, 04:22 PM I envy you bro!! Your project car is coming along very nice. I can't wait to see the final project!

Spent time today power-washing the engine bay and removing the power steering crap (have to replace it with DOHC unit) and getting the harness all the way out. Didn't do much more than that; I was on a time limit with the pressure washer (rented) and it was rainy here anyway.
Unfortunately, I found some more rust. none of it life-threatening for the car, but not what I wanted to see either. I figure I'll thrash this car for all it's worth, then transfer the drivetrain into a clean hatch or S14 :D:D

you can go to an auto body shop and get spray paint that converts rust into primer so it will stop the rotting, not too terribly expensive, just spray it, let it sit a day or two, get a metal brush on it and primer again, unfortunately I am having to do a ton of this with the 510 along the firewall and having to replace the floorboards, but its ok, the welder I ordered came in today

whats that stuff called? ill be needing that stuff very soon.
brian 07-26-2004, 06:34 PM I don't really remember, it is in a black spray can though, I have not had to buy it in a while, but was pretty easy to get. you can even get some stuff at auto zone that works pretty well too
NissanTuner 07-26-2004, 09:09 PM rust convertor? Its pretty good stuff.
Hey Ritt, looking good man.
I notice your coolant bottle appears to be in one piece, congrats!
Good luck with the swap. Soon I'll be RB powered!
