Hello, I have some piston slap in my GTi-R, so I figured I'd upgrade my pistons. I found some CP pistons, for under 500 dollars new, has anyone used them in a GTi-R motor, or any SR20 for that matter?

Also, any opinions on the strength of the GTi-R rods? Should I replace them as well? Or should they be ok.

Also, if I get new pistons, I know that nissan balances all its motors to a certain level, if I get just pistons, will I need to get my engine balanced, or even blueprinted?

Thank you.

CP Pistons are supposed to be great ! My next set for what ever I build will be CP more than likely. I know that CP has made pistons for NASCAR. As far as Rods if your rebuilding, might as well get something better there as well.

The Gti-R rods are good for over 400 whp. Do you plan to make more power than that? CP pistons are great, but do they have the notch for the piston oil coolers?

Well thats what they say about the Rods  , BUT after 2 years my # 2 rod went through the block 5 times :eek2: !! So to be safe I would replace the Rods. :biggthump

Well, just b/c it happened to you doesn't mean that's how it is.

Thats why I said if your in there, might as well replace them, "Better Safe Than Sorry".
And I'm not the only one I know, that this happened to. Also if you read closely I said after 2 years, about 21,000 miles. and this was daily abuse.

Also this is called sharing a experience that I had, never said that this has been researched, and that this is a fact, that this is gonna happen.

Also the next time you pipe in on a topic, and give your 2 cents, should we make comments about your experience, And just disregard it?
THANKS " NICE GUY " ;)

Stop acting immature. Geezus, what are we, 18 years old and feeling like we have to get back at somebody if they say something we don't like.

There are so many variables that could've caused your rod "going through the block 5 times" that your advice was poorely suggested. To tell the truth, I'd be willing to bet that your rod "going through the block 5 times" was nobodys fault but your own, or whomever tuned/built the car. But that's besides the point...

The point is, that Gti-R rods have been proven to handle in excess of 400 whp in a properly tuned car. There is NO reason to replace them unless you just have money to blow.

Also, the next time you pipe up in THIS topic, and give your 2 cents, how about not showing such a magnificent correlation between yourself and a 1st grader.

Wow, CP pistons have been talked about many times before. I know this because I have mentioned them personally. They are a great product and well worth the money. I say skip the GTi-R ones as well and get some nice eagle rods!

I believe he has a GTIR motor so he can't use eagle rods he needs some custom rods for his motor of Par Rods which cost bout $900. I would get the CP pistons for my GTIR but the say it won't clear th oil squirters and I don't wanna have to shave anything off some $500 pistons. I think I'll go with some 9.1 compression wiseco that should net me personall abot 8.8to 1 compression.

Great information, thanks guys,

So do the oil squirters definately not clear with the CP's??? That would really suck...

has anyone heard bad stuff about the Wiseco pistons? Those would probably be my 2nd choice, as long as they are not very loud.

What about rings? Do the wiseco's come with rings? Supposidly the CP's come with rings, and I saw some for sale new for 500 bucks with the rings...

BTW, I think I will just stick with my stock rods if I have to have some custom shizzle made, that sounds pricey...

Also I got another question, should I have my engine re-balanced with the new pistons, is this necessary?

Thanks again.

Wiseco;s have been in my car for 1.5 yrs and 17k... they had no problem clearing my oil squirters and handle my abuse with no problem. This was on a gti-r motor btw.

Not sure wher eyou heard that, but from everything I have read they do indeed clear the squirters. You need to call JGY!

It was JGY website that said the piston dont clear the oil squirters on the GTIR DET's and that about 1mm had o be shaved off. Simon do you have stock bore wiseco pistons or the 86.5mm pistons.

I got the regular bore...86mm pistons. But mine were swain coated and I got the polymoly skirts so it doesnt rattle for tighter clearances because they were grade 1? and i needed a grade 2 piston... i forgot but I have the clearance on the box in my basement.

CP pistons need 1mm notched off to clear Gti-R oil squirters. CP pistons clear the squirters on Bluebird, though.

they also clear on RWD SR20DET

I think I might go with Wiseco's then, has anybody any suggestions? What's the deal with the polymoly skirt? I have never heard of this, nor Grading.

For the GTi-R is 86mm a good bore to get?

Thanks.

i hold CP pistons as the best in my opinion. other then notching the pistons, i would think you could just use a thicker copper o ring for the squirters to lower them so they clear.
