: tint removal - HELP!
sabominator 08-11-2004, 03:45 PM not sure if this is the right place to post my question...
i bought my '93 SE-R with super dark tint on all the side and rear windows (it looks new, not cracked or bubbled). i've read tips to remove it yourself with simple green or ammonia and a trash bag - sounds tedious and easy to screw up. some questions:
-any of you tried to remove tint yourself? how difficult was it?
-what would i expect to pay in NH or MA to have a shop do it? is it worth it?
-i know this tint is illegal in NH - am i going to be harassed constantly by the local 5-0? what kind of tickets do you get for this?
any advice is helpful - i need to get it inspected this month.
thanks!
La_Noche 08-11-2004, 03:49 PM Hmmm, I know my boss at nissan said he charges $50/hour to remove it and its like a 2 hour job or something like that. And one of the kids who work there had to remove the tint from his car. It looked like he was just scraping it off though.
1F@$t9d7 08-11-2004, 04:42 PM Just peel it off. I used that tint remover stuff with a garbage bag and it didn't work. If you peel it off you will leave all the glue on the window so get some soapy water in a spray bottle or some windex and a sponge. I used a plastic scrapper (paint depot in Wal-Mart) and got the majority of the glue off with it. On the rear window with the defrost lines DO NOT use the scraper only the sponge so you don't knick any of the lines.
It is time consuming but a lot cheaper in the long run.

Thats what I would suggest........tint remover is a waste of money and doesn't work properly.
Nitelife 08-11-2004, 05:23 PM I had to remove tint on my B15 once. It was during summer so I just worked at getting a corner up and it actually came off pretty easily since it was so heated from being in the sun. There was residual glue, as mentioned previously, so you will need to clean that up.
Good luck!
BadAzzSentra 08-11-2004, 06:07 PM A friend of mine tints for a living and he uses a citrus based sray to get the glue off. this spray is made by blue coral, dont know the name of it. but I believe any citrus type cleaning sray will work. he used it on my windows worked great.
haha... i hate removing tint, and would always pay someone to do it!!! side windows are cake, use lots of soapy water, and a razor blade, b/c the stuff is a bitch!!! If you have a rear defroster save yourself the time, and find someone willing to do it. IT SUX, and if you are not careful, you might screw up the rear defroster. DO NOT USE THE RAZOR ON THE REAR WINDOW.
good luck, and seriously, it sucks.
RockyB 08-11-2004, 09:32 PM Hey, I just had my brand new tints removed here in CT for $40. F@cking cops had nothing better to do but pull me over. But the spray they used to remove the glue smelled citrus like. It gave my car a new smell :)

sr20sentra91 08-11-2004, 11:54 PM my rear defroster didnt work anyways, so i used my brothers window tenting tools and scraped it off :D who needs a rear defroster anyways?
Toolapcfan 08-12-2004, 12:51 AM I've removed tint numerous times, and there's no way around it, it sucks, especially on rear defroster grids. I've always found it was easiest to just peel the tint off, then used aerosol glass cleaner that has amonia in it, to soften the adhesive still left on the window. If it doesnt peel off, then you'll have to just use a razor blade, preferably in a razor scraper type of holder, it's easier on your hands, and just scrape it off. Dirtex glass cleaner is what I use and what a lot of tint shops use because it quickly emulsifies the glue and you just scrape it off with a razor blade. Be sure to put paper towels or rags along the bottom edge of the window to catch the runs because it'll glue your weatherstrip to the glass, not to mention the glue will get on your door apholstery and make a damn mess. If it peels off in large sheets you can do it rather quick. Otherwise it'll take all damn day. It took me at least 6-8 hours to get the tint off the rear window in my '93 XE because it didn't peel off and I wasn't going to ruin the grid with the razor blade, so I had to go really slow. I ran the razor at an angle to fit between the lines of the grid.

where did you go for $40?? a guy in concord told me it would be $100 for the rear cause of the defroster, and $25 a window. sucks to be me.
Roll-Mod-L 08-12-2004, 04:27 PM You can peel the tint off the sides and scrape off the glue with a single edge blade and scraper and use an amonia base product soften it. For the rear window there are a number of ways it can be done and a few products used to remove it. One of the easiest ways is to use the garbage bag method (it works) but you will need to do this on a hot sunny day. Slice the bag open so its fits the whole rear glass, you can use a spray bottle with water to hold it to the glass. Using a razor blade trace the bag to the outline of your rear window. Using windex or amonia product spray the inside of your rear window and then while it is still wet place the bag on the inside of the window and make sure it covers the entire glass. Place the car in the sun and let it sit for about an hour. After the hour and while still in the sun you must peel off the tint with the garbage bag in place (do not remove the bag). Start peeling the tint in one corner to get it started. The whole thing should come off in one peice if done right.
brian 08-12-2004, 04:27 PM I would rather go to the hospital and get stuck with needles than remove tint, did it once, never again...................................
tystyx49 08-12-2004, 09:21 PM i took mine off after i bought it and just peeled it off then used some windex and a razor blade to get all the goo off. as others have said, it took a while, but i would never pay someone to do something like that.
It took me a few hours to remove the tint on the front windows and the 1/4 panel glass with razor blade and wax&grease remover, but I gave up on the rear glass. I peeled off the tint on the glass already but the glue and a very thin layer of tint still stuck on the glass. I tried using solvents of all kinds to remove it, but it just won't clean-up. I just cannot get the glue off without messing up the defogger. So, my rear glass now looks like it has a 50% tint on it instead of the 5% limo-tint.
Any suggestion before I replace the glass??
