: Hypercos with KYB GR-2s
FlippyBoy 08-24-2004, 03:13 PM Im getting in on the group buy for the Hypercos and want to know how they will perform with my (almost new) GR-2's, which i currently have on the car with the stock springs. I've heard everything from "they wont be nearly enough for the Hypercos" to "They work great."
I want to hear from the people who actually have this setup - I know you guys are out there - I want to know what you think of your setup. Do you wish you had AGX's (or Koni's, etc), or are you truly happy with the way your car handles?
Also, just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the stock spring rates are?
El Gabito 08-24-2004, 03:22 PM In case you didn't know GR-2's are stock replacements. So it'd be like putting the hypercos on a stock se-r.
FlippyBoy 08-24-2004, 04:27 PM I guess I didnt know that. So how stiff are the stock springs?

Stock spring rates for the SER is fr123 rr112. The Hyperco Gen2s are fr300 rr200.
FlippyBoy 08-24-2004, 06:33 PM wow, thats a big difference.... Ive heard at least one person say they were happy with the GR-2's and hypercos, so I think I will try them before spending another $400 on the agx's.
seryusly 08-24-2004, 06:53 PM ive had the hypercos gen 2 and gr-2 on my car for a while. i dont have any complaints.
FlippyBoy 08-24-2004, 06:57 PM does it ever get bouncey?
FastNX 08-24-2004, 07:27 PM I had hypercos and AGXs, but I found it too harsh. That is probably partly becuase of the full ES bushing set as well as the 50 series Bridgestones.
I have bought shortened Konis, but have not installed them because my car got rear- ended

That sucks.
seryusly 08-25-2004, 05:51 PM my ride is not bouncy. i go over a bump, i jump up and land back down and i keep going. :)
FlippyBoy 08-25-2004, 06:08 PM Thats what I was hoping to hear - how long have you been usung that setup?
bullfrg 08-25-2004, 08:31 PM I had that exact setup for over a year with no issueson my old SE-R. Thought the ride was fine, about the same as my stock setup on my new ride. I am sure it is not the best solution if you have the funds upgrade to the agx's if not they will work. Mine were not even new when I mounted the Hypercoil Gen 2's.
jharris1 08-28-2004, 11:03 AM I would also like to know how GR-2s would be with Gen2s, because I planned on going with the more expensive AGXs, but if the GR-2s will work well with the Hypercos, I may go that route. Is it worth it?
gwellwood 09-11-2004, 12:39 PM I run Gen2's on AGX's. To keep the car somewhat controlled in Winter (I'm in Canada, eh!), I turn the shocks down for more compliance. With the fronts at 2 and the rear at 3, the rear was noticeably too bouncy. Running the rear at 4 was much better. Fronts at 1 were too bouncy for the old Tokico springs I used to run.
Keep in mind that AGX fronts on 1 and rears on 2 are the same damping as OEM struts. It is my opinion that GR2's would be way too underdamped for Gen2 Hypercoils. Tokico blues were way to underdamped for their own springs (154#F/152#R), and blues are OEM replacement like the GR2's are.
If you are a boulevard cruiser, GR2's would be ~O~K~, but AGX's would be significantly better.
For what it's worth, I drive on the street with the fronts at 2 (used to be 3, but I am experimenting) and the rears at 8. Currently running bald winter tires, but usually 195/50R15 Kumho 712's in summer.
I would suspect that a lot of people can't tell that their car is underdamped with GR2's/Blues. Watch your car on video. It's an eye-opener.

Cannibal 09-12-2004, 10:06 PM ^^I agree. Gen2's and GR-2's would not work very well for very long. Sure you can run them for a while but your dampers would be overworked and wear very quickly. I'm pretty sure my GR-2's are already dead with my Gen1's even though the GR-2's are only about 1.5-2 years old. My GR-2's are underdamped for even the Gen1's at times and the Gen1's aren't much stiffer than stock although they drop the car a ton which is part of the problem. If your car is "bouncy" than your dampers are not up to the task of your springs. Save your money and either get AGX's or the shortened Koni's.
vqman 09-24-2004, 06:19 AM shortened Koni's
that's what I'll be getting for my Gen III Hyperco's..
