: Minor Accident
keithert 11-09-2001, 06:52 PM Last night someone rear-ended me in my NX. The damage appears to be extremely minor. Just a mark on the bumper cover where she hit me. How can I tell if the shock behind the bumper is damaged. If it is not I would like to put the money from the insurance into a new paint job rather than fixing the small scratches in the plastic cover.
keithert 11-09-2001, 06:53 PM The person that hit me was driving a Civic.
i just had the same thign happen gto me about a month or so ago no damage underneath i got a new bumper but the other persons insurance coverd it.
keithert 11-09-2001, 07:28 PM How much did the insurance company pay for the new bumper and installation?
i have no clue, i just showed up to a body shop with a pice of paper from ICBC and said go all out. and picked up my car two days latter.

Just pop your hatch and look at the trunk floor...see if there are any ripples in it...and look under the car...your bumper doesn't have "shocks" it has a "rebar" which is just a metal bracke that your bumper attatches too...and it bolts in at the trunck floor...you'll see two little round rubber covers on either side of spare tire area near the back...the bumper bolts that hold it on are under those rubber things....
NX-DET 11-10-2001, 03:08 AM you said "she" that totally makes sense because its always a womans fault for "all" accidents!!!!!! lol

Doug:D I won't touch that with a ten foot pole :D ya, just looked, all there is back there is a bumper support, a energy absorber (foam) and the bumper. if it is not crumped, just sand and paint
aknapp 11-10-2001, 10:00 AM Regarding shocks for the bumper: I had a 79 Volvo once that DID have small shocks for the bumpers. I got rear-ended once by a 74 Monaco - he was doing 30, I was stopped. No injuries to me, and only a *very slight* indentation to the bumper (maybe an 1/8 of an inch). Compare that to the time when a Yukon rear-ended my NX at 30 MPH and caused $1800 damage.
Damn Volvos are built like a friggin' TANK!

Actually it's Styrofoam (sp?), and it would be a good idea to have that replaced. Also, the bumper support will probably need to be reploaced also.
Just because the bumper cap has minimal dameage, doesn't mean that the components underneath weren't.
brian 11-10-2001, 02:11 PM ya, that is what I meant. :)

Yeah...there MAY be some damage...the styrophome really searves no purpose, other than to form the bumper, and make it so it dapens the impace a bit...thats why its sometimes refered to as the "impact strip"...if its just cracked in a place or two, chanes are that you DON'T have to replace it...and you can pocket the cash...and if it is as light of a hit as he describes, then it most likely didn't damage the bumper re-bar...but you can have the bumper off in about 10 or 15 bolts...to determin if there is damage to either thing...let me know if you need help getting the bumper off Keithert...
I got hit awhile back but the people didn't have insurance, so my freind said he could do it for $600 compared to the 1,700 it was going to cost the body shop

The Styrofoam is there to absorb the forces of minor impacts, and to help the bumper cover maintain it's shape. It cracks very easily.
keithert 11-11-2001, 06:14 PM Okay, lets say that there is hidden damage. If I leave it and the car gets hit again the insurance from that accident will cover it right. So why do I need to worry about if the sytrofoam is crushed.
