My '98 200sx is throwing this code. Is this something I can change myself? Does anyone have instructions? Where can I get an fsm that might have a procedure in it? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. - Jamie

very easy to change yourself, I use to have a spare..
on your car its located behind the drivers rear tire near the gas tank.. its two 10mm or 12mm bolts and 2-3 rubber lines... very easy fix... may also want to check the charcoal canister to make sure its not full of water.

Also - if you refilled gas before this light came on, you just might notta tightened the gas cap enough.

What are the symptoms of this valve going bad? Is it only on b14s or does it affect b13s also?

It doesn't do much - it's supposed to control evaporative emissions (fuel evaporating in the tank). The tank has to be vented, so it doesn't blow up, but the canister is supposed to keep the nasty fumes out of the air. Basically the car still works fine but it throws a code. I guess dirt gets into the valve down there and keeps it from working properly. I had to do one at about 60k on my mom's I30, and I did a few on pathy's and max's when I worked at the nissan dealer. Technically, since it's an emissions device, it's covered by the 10 year/100k federal emissions warranty, but it's like a $20 valve and easy to do, so I just paid for it on my mom's car and did it after work rather than wait for an appointment.

Does anyone have the name of the parts and part #s required to resolve this problem. I've had this code for a long time and I think its time to take care of it.

Up here in the north, the vent control valve gets corroded and rust builds up not allowing the solenoid to work properly causing an evap leak. The thing that sucks is a lot of times replacing them, the 2 10mm bolts that hold the control valve to the charcoal canister get rusted and will spin in the canister and you will have to replace both the vent control valve AND the charcoal canister.

make sure you buy the part for a 98 se-r...
The canister is different size/located up front in the eary 97s back to 91......
Late 97 and all 98s they are behind the rear wheel...
I bought the whole canister and vent cntrl valve at a junkyard for like $20.....

That's true, when we did these as warranty jobs we always replaced the valve and canister just in case. I was able to do just the valve on the I30 though.
