A buddy ran out of gas last night in his 240sx and is worried about possible damage to the fuel system or anything in general.

Does anyone know the effect on the car when this happens? I could see the fuel filter may get clogged since all the junk on the bottom of the tank is sucked through it. Anything else to worry about?

Making matters even worse, he didn't realize he ran out of gas since the gauge is broken, and tried to start the car again and again even though it was empty!

Thanks

well A)happend to many I know quite a bit, no harm done and B)
tell your buddy to set that trip odometer so he KNOWS when the time is coming near to just go ahead and fill it up. He just needs to see how many gallons he put in there as well so he has that to base *** mileage from. My dad's truck does not have a working gauge and it has never been a problem as long as that odo is set and you pay attention.

it hasn't been until the last generation or two of motorcycles that have fuel gauges. we always just reset the trip meter and watch how many miles we go.

and running out of gas should be a none issue. there's a filter on the pump and the fuel filter.

i actually hear this a lot from my friends cause i like to run on the empty light for a few miles until i really think i need new gas. but im guessing that it happening once cant be bad...

the only thing i could see happening would be a burned out fuel pump. But even that is a fat chance.

I've run out once. I was late for a work meeting, and trying to make it. I regularly run on the light, I try to wait for that 310 miles on the trip odo. That's usually around 12-12.5gal depending on my driving.

the gas gauge in my 240 is slow, after i run it hard it drops alot and then overtime it comes back up, and when i fill it, it takes a while for it go up. *** is the matter with it?
