I'm going to look at a 96 Se-R tomorrow. It's a 5spd, has 56k miles and they are asking $6000. This is well within my price range but seems kind of low for the low mileage. How much should I expect to pay for a 96 Se-R with average mileage in good shape? Also what things should I pay special attention to? What items seem to wear out before everything else and cause problems? Thanks! :)

That is a hell of a good price, I paid 4800 for my 95 with 59,000 about 5 months ago. I would look for normal leakage of any type. Make sure the odometer is working first off! Shouldnt have to worry about it having 5th gear pop-out. Look for rust, inside doors near fenders. Check body lines closely to make sure of non-major accidents, check core support in engine bay to see if it is a replacement, that way you can tell if it was ever in a front end collision, a bad one anyway. Make sure there are no rattles or pings when you start it up and drive it, no smoke, yadda, yadda.

Thats about as much as I can tell you without you knowing how it sounds or drives! Let us know how it turns out!

Oh yeah, get in the trunk, pull up the carpet near each taillight to see if the bottom is stained, if so it may leak a little when it rains. Check to make sure brakes dont need to be changed right off. Chekc oil, pull dipstick, see what color it is, you can tell if they change the oil on time or not by how dark it is. Open the coolant resevoir to make sure there are no signs of oil droplets, a good sign the head gasket is going or gone.

Hope this helps and sorry to sound like Tarzan, but you said you were in a hurry so I tried to be quick!

One more thing, this may sound silly but I have read about some cars being sold as SE-R that were actually a SE-R and something else welded / sewen (sp?) together so just look for anything that may indicate that such as weld lines across the car underneath and by all means a make sure it has disk brakes all the way around. All SE-R's have disk brakes all around just in case you didn't know. That is how one I read about was found to be a seamstress special.

What a price! I paid $6,000 for mine with 90,000. Of course thats lower than what they usually go for around here. I was looking for an NX, but you can't find those around here either. Since I bought mine in January, I've seen maybe 7 total 200sx Se-R's on the road! Hows that for rare? (and Im right outside a fairly large city)

I ended up paying 9600 for my 97 200sx w/43k on it. I thought I paid a good price since the car is a rare color. But that is a very good price. Just watch out for a few little things inside and outside the car. Make sure the tachometer reads up to 9 grand. I met this kid who said his sentra SE was an se-r because the badge said so. I showed him that and he was shocked and mad because he got ripped off. He took it back to the dealership and sued them. Also, (this was mentioned before) look at the brakes. All se-r's are 4 wheel disc brakes. Look at the motor, make sure on the block engraved it says SR20. Then grab the vin number and run a car fax on it or some other report. Look at all of the body lines. The wheels should be 5 stars not 8. But otherwise that is about it. I have an intake for sale if you want it. Good luck with this car.

Hey Mark, your styrofoam filter wouldn't happen to be a Weapon R filter would it? I have that and I have no idea how to clean it. I don't plan on keeping it, but I'd like it to be clean when I attempt to sell it.
