: Griffin Intercooler Installed
Low612 11-15-2001, 03:29 AM Just installed a griffin IC that i picked up from RRE . The core size is 20X10X2.75. This thing is CRAZY much better than the starion IC..well we all know that. I will have some pics soon .

How much does the Griffin run? I plan on doing the det swap after I get my car either this christmas or summer.
Low612 11-17-2001, 12:35 PM yah! Brian whats up?! Longtime no speak. I also picked up a 90 Talon Tsi :>) My commuter aka. next project.
oh man that intercooler made so much difference over the starion i guess it getting more flow . At 8 psi it feels like i have gained 15-20 with that IC> hmmm

NismoB13SE-R 11-17-2001, 03:23 PM How much did it set you back? I was looking at a spearco core, and those dimensions you placed are pretty much them...And where/who distrubutes them??

Yellow4g63 11-17-2001, 09:03 PM If we tell you then everyone will want to order from them. then they are goin to raise the price. He paid around $300 for the core, It uses HK$ endtanks RRE sells them.

Quick, someone delete this thread before it's too late!!! :D
BUT WHO IS RRE and how do I get ahold of them??
SucKit 11-18-2001, 01:17 PM easy...RRE is road race engineering. They have good stuff for 3 inch cats and 3in flexs too and of course intercooler and piping.
NismoB13SE-R 11-19-2001, 05:01 AM Naah..I think *** stick with spearco :) I like the idea of a thicker core...

Low612 11-21-2001, 04:36 AM Well i must say this IC flows much better than the starion." no kidding"... At 8psi with starion it feels just like that 8psi. With the Griffin 8psi feels like 11 psi on starion. These is just seat of the pants. The spearco core was my original choice but the hieght of the griffin IMHO makes up for the thickness of the spearco. Mr. Yellow talon i will need some pointers on for my 90 tsi for cheap mods.

except off the line
Yellow4g63 11-21-2001, 05:27 AM U can check www.DSM.com and check out the Vfaqs
If your 14B isn't too beat up get full exhust from the 02 housing back 3" get rid of that cat. Get upper Intercooler piping, Air filter, Rewire the Fuel pump or Upgrade to a 150lph or 255lph. Get a AFC. I forgot but thier is some trick you can do to let you boost more that 18psi. But with the AFC and some Race gas and 22psi you should get into the 12's on that 14B. but check the Vfaqs some good info.
Low612 11-21-2001, 12:19 PM Coolness. Brian let me know if you have anything forsale also. I can see the upper intercooler piping making a big difference. It mad a huge difference on the se-r. Im checkin around for a 2nd gen TB elbow, exhaust manifold(cracked) and valvecover cracked.
I removed the boost solenoid restrictor and have a test pipe .

Yellow4g63 11-21-2001, 02:18 PM RRE has EVO3 Exhaust manifolds. They are about the same price as a new one, but it's larger on the inside.
Low612 11-22-2001, 03:37 AM Evo 3 manifold i was thinking of getting but i would also need the o2 housing as well which is not included right? From my understanding its like pretty pricey. Iam open for use items i will be happy with upper pipe throttlebody elbow and turbo outlet upgrades. I guess the cheapest way is to buy some mandrel bends and have them welded or get used.
Yellow4g63 11-22-2001, 07:24 AM Check www.thepartstrader.com you should be able to find upper/lower IC. U won't need the EVO 3 O2 housing, it would be nice ***.
v8killer2001 11-22-2001, 08:48 PM But with the AFC and some Race gas and 22psi you should get into the 12's on that 14B.
***I am just curious. How is that DSM guys are able to boost so high (like 22 psi) on their stock 14B turbos without blowing them up, while it is usually not recommended to boost more than 12 psi on a Bluebird/Garrett T25?
Doesn't such high boost overload the thrust bearings and cause major oil leaks?
Are the Mitsubishi turbos just designed to run at higher boost levels, whereas the Garrett's are not?
Yellow4g63 11-22-2001, 09:46 PM If the 14B isn't in bad shape then it can take the 22psi of boost. If it's not in good shape it will shit all over you and the people behinde you. I know all about blowin a 14B @22psi :( it was like spy hunter style smoke screen. The 14B has a higher HP limit than the T25, I think they said the most you can get from a good 14B was a lil over 300hp. The Turbo is a lil laggy, My started to pull at 3k.

I was under the impression that a thicker core didnt make too much of a diffrence. I was told that the majority of the cooling is done within the first 2 inches fromt the front of the intercooler. Somebody correct me if I am wrong but dont just say you are wrong. Please explain it to me.
Low612 11-26-2001, 01:36 AM Well im not an "expert" but from my understanding the more "surface area" the better . I have also heard thicker is better but as far as fitment for "me" my bumper was hacked to accomidate a starion IC so the griffin core seemed a easier task to install vs. the spearco. this is based on how my piping and bumper support was cut. Prolly doesnt help much but since alot of modded cars have thicker radiators for more efficient cooling
it must be beneficial. Anybody care to elaborate .
