: suggestion for saturday events
spdracerUT 09-27-2004, 01:59 PM How about a car rally? There are some great roads in and around the austin area. So hook everyone up with maps and have rally points. And suggested stops could be at some very good BBQ locations :) Some good outdoors areas (lakes, parks, etc). to chill.
I'll be at a wedding in Houston that day, but there are some guys in Austin that could plan it.
NoClassic 09-27-2004, 03:20 PM Sounds good to me. I have a few friends in Austin that would be more than willing to tag along as well.
Slartibartfast 09-27-2004, 07:25 PM I'm sitting on the fence, here.
Central Texas has some great roads but don't know that we want the club to be involved in what will probably degenerate into road-racing or a ticket-fest by local PDs once they find out about us.
Really, though, trip out to Enchanted Rock and Wimberly and down Lime Creek would be an awesome ride. Maybe supply maps and let you guys do your own thing...maybe have a club meet at a specific restaurant for lunch and see you there by hook or crook.
spdracerUT 09-27-2004, 08:45 PM yeah, i'd only be worried about people speeding and such... maybe some type of self-enforcement. Or have a follow the leader and the leader controls the pace. Granted, the twistes are fun and it'd be an elevated pace... but just nothing stupid and reckless.
Actually, a Time/Speed/Distance (TSD) rally does not require exceeding the speed limit. Furthermore, the rules of such are that anyone caught breaking any traffic laws are immediately disqualified.
TSD rallies are a great deal of fun (or can be). They are a great way to have fun in your car at legal speeds. They are best run away from traffic since teams can occasionally become distracted.
I really like this idea. Perhaps it could be run where the finish is at a park where we can have a picnic? The hard part will be getting someone willing to design the rally for us. The best sort for novices is a "trapped" rally where if you make a mistake you still typically end back up on the course. Then of course there is the equipment to keep the time at all of the checkpoints. I suspect we would have to pay a group that holds these to put on our event.
Probably worth looking into.

Possibly contact the local SCCA region, we could even do a joint event with them. I know here in the Indy region we have about one road rally a month.
Rockwood 09-29-2004, 02:50 PM i thought SERCA specifically avoided cruises because showboating is guaranteed to happen?
i like the idea of a cruise. we should have groups with leaders. maybe we just wont tell everyone where we are going, only the group leaders (which will be clearly marked) and the leaders set the pace? this way, the group leaders are the ones responsible for speed, and most people wont speed becuase they have no idea where we are going. if they do speed, they will be seperated from the group and will not pose a threat to law abiding SERCA members. if there are enough group leaders, then we will not have to worry about people getting seperated and lost. maybe a leader and someone to bring up the rear who knows where they are going.
whachoo guys think?
Rockwood 09-29-2004, 02:52 PM also, motorola talk abouts are useful.

A TSD rally is absolutely NOT a cruise or an excuse to speed. If anything it will encourage slightly slower speeds. A TSD rally requires you to follow a precise route at a prescribed speed (at or below the speed limit). You pass through checkpoints periodically that are not announced ahead of time. You have to enter the checkpoint at precise times and any early or late entry accumulates penalty points. It's actually a lot of fun. And again, any breaking of traffic laws causes IMMEDIATE disqualification.

i have no doubt that they promote slower speeds. but, you get two kids in their SE-Rs next to each other, unsupervised and free to go as fast as they want (they know where they are going) and you will have issues with speed and racing. i know when i was 18-20, i would have.
i think we need some sort of direct supervision. some of these kids will not care about the TSD, but more to show off their cars to other people, and that results in speeding, reckless driving, etc. i dont think that most of the younger crowd attending the convention will care about winning the TSD. remember, there is a whole new generation of SE-R owners out there...
El Gabito 09-30-2004, 12:08 AM How bout if Mad Max comes in his car and regulates if anyone gets out of line...
:biggthump
I think a road rally would be great, hopefully it can work out.
shit, i have always wanted to do one of those, but i dont think they do them here. i would help organize if there is anything i could do, i think its a great idea.
spdracerUT 09-30-2004, 12:37 AM yeah.. I think it'd be a ton of fun! First, keep the groups down to 3-4 cars so it's easier not to lose someone. Have only the leader know the route and make sure the leader is responsible! Have the groups leave in around 3-5 minute intervals.
I'd start the morning off to Mt. Bonnell, and spend a little bit of time there. Great view. Then head over to Oasis by way of 2222 to grab some lunch. Another spectacular view sure to not disappoint. And from there, hope straight over to Lime Creek Road... about 20 miles of twisties :)
That'll end up on road 1431. From there, head west to Marble Falls. Some really cool scenic stuff out there, I think waterfalls.... head south on 281 and then east on 71 to get back to Austin. That's headin pretty far out there though! Well, from there, 71 runs into Bee Caves/2244, and take that until you hit Mopac/Loop 1. Distance from Marble Falls to Austin on 71 is roughly 50 miles. Take Mopac south, stop for some beer, and head over to Salt Lick for some of the best BBQ in the world! It's a BYOB place :)
So between lunch and dinner.... hmm.. it's actually only about 3 hours of driving if you don't stop. Damn... I might have to skip the wedding for that...

uhh.... what is this "wedding" you speak of? :D
El Gabito 09-30-2004, 04:18 PM any drag strips?
In San Antonio, about an hour away.
uhh.... what is this "wedding" you speak of? :D
i heard you and frank were going to tie the knot dressed as storm troopers.
spdracerUT 10-01-2004, 08:20 AM I thought it was Han Solo and Princess Leia? Who's gonna be the princess though?
GregV 10-01-2004, 09:35 AM I'd worry less about the guys in the SE-Rs and worry more about the fools in rental cars...uh..wait a second..
In all reality, why not do a poker run? We could charge a small fee, use some of the raffle stuff as prizes, and end up in some cool spot for refreshments. We would need some volunteers in 3-5 spots to hand out cards, but that's it.
Rockwood 10-01-2004, 12:45 PM yeah, damned hooligans in rentals...
wait, where am i?
