: Fan shroud install
Rittmeister 10-26-2004, 10:16 PM OK guys, about the last thing I have to do on the SR is install the fan shroud. I've got a Koyo radiator which is about four times the thickness of the stocker, and the shroud won't drop in because the fan's in the way. I'm trying to avoid draining the rad to remove the upper hose and slip it in that way; does anyone know if you can remove the fan, install the shroud, and get the fan back on from underneath? Or can I split the shroud at the bottom or something to give me some more flex?
TIA
NissanTuner 10-26-2004, 11:57 PM no clue. i'll take a peak tommorrow.
Crono1321 10-27-2004, 01:05 AM Shrouds are fugly. Stay away from them The Cheat.
RYAN_S-14 10-27-2004, 04:54 AM y not get some electric fans? i used some p-10 electric fans and they work great.
it really opens the front of the engine up with no clutch fan.
Rittmeister 10-27-2004, 06:34 AM I considered electric fans, but right now the guys having no overheating problems are the ones running the stock clutch fan and shroud. At least for the moment, electric fans are not under consideration.

i removed my fan shroud without draining the radiator and removing the upper hose so i know it can be done. it was not the easyist thing but was done none the less.
you might have to remove the fan and put it in the shroud (hope that makes sence) then install the shroud and put the fan back on. make sure you temp install the bolts on the pully (i am sure you know this just making sure)

I'm running FAL 210 electric fans without the OE shroud and have no overheating problems. One fan is wired to the stock thermostat and the other is wired to a switch in the center console. Works like a charm.

How do I connect my fan to the stock thermostat?
RYAN_S-14 10-28-2004, 11:40 AM How do I connect my fan to the stock thermostat?
i ran power to my fan through the cd player acc wire. ground it in the engine bay somewhere and its always on
I have Flex-a-lite dual 12 inch fans and no overheating problems at all, even when I lived in Orlando. I also have the stock radiator.
The easiest way to get the shroud in there would probably be to remove the fan from the pulley and snake it back in there when the shroud is installed. That's how I had to do it on my Mustang back in the day. It was a very tight squeeze, but with enough jiggling and manipulating it fit.
nite-stalker 10-28-2004, 01:04 PM since you say its the upper rad hose, can't you just remove it from the radiator and hang it up? you will lose only a little coolant?

What do you do when you want the fans off?
Rittmeister 10-28-2004, 04:25 PM Jim, how does one wire the fan to the stock thermostat? Is this an S14-only item?
Nismo1182 10-28-2004, 04:58 PM Theres a sensor for the fan on the thermostat. It activates the stock electric fan when the engine heats up over 200*. Same fan also comes on when the AC is turned on.
I myself have 3 electric fans. 1 12" to replace the stock one that failed, and 2 12" on the radiator itself. I only turn on the fans (via a switch under the dash) when im in traffic or a drive thru. Other than that, I dont turn the fans on and the temp always stays below normal. I run a dual core S14 radiator in my S13.

the fans turn off with the car, but stay on when you have the key in acc.
i have never had a time when i need the acc on and am working on the car for a long period of time.. does that make sence to you?
Rittmeister 10-28-2004, 10:12 PM Well, screw this anyway. I snapped the shroud in half trying to get it in there. Thought I was being careful, obviously not. This is the second shroud - the first was not the right one (I think it was for S14).
And so, electric fans here I come, sometime. Undecided on which ones but I'll probably get a twin setup so I can run them like Jim's (never considered that the two could be wired separately).
nite-stalker 10-28-2004, 11:22 PM can't beat ebay twin 12" fans for $70
Rittmeister 10-29-2004, 12:01 AM Is this what you're referring to?

If so:
1. Have you used them?
2. Will they both fit on the S13 Koyo radiator, and how do they attach?
3. How has the quality been?
That price is of course attractive but at the moment I'm looking at Flex-a-lite dual 10 or 12 inch fans, mostly because it's all one piece.

Yes, basically you are saying there was never a time when you thought you would drain the battery by leaving the fans on too long while the engine was off. I think you could 1-up your system, by just adding a switch to it, that way you can always leave the switch on, except for extinuating circumstances. ACC-switch-fans. Always on when the key is in, except for when you flick the switch OFF.

You silly banilly...not 10", 12"! I got both of my fans for lie $75 shipped from ebay, bought them from the same seller and he combined shipping. They are EXACTLY THE SAME as the ones discount/autozone sell for $65 a piece+tax. You get these htings that are like long zip ties, and then they to through the radiator fins into the fan mounting holes. They come with these little round things you put on the "long zip tie" that are one way (meaning they don't come off!) And you just snip the "zip tie" for the correct length so there are no nasty tips. You can get a kit of 4-6 or so at any auto parts store for around $5-10...I did this on my se-r.
