hi, my gtir has lost power steering and now i can hardly park the 4wd anywhere, its like driving a truck. i have chekced the fluid levels and the cables but there is no leak. maybe the pump is screwd. can anyone tell me how i can find out if the pump is not pulling.. do i have to pull apart the engine??? :-?

I assume the drive belt for P/S and water pump are still intact.

yep, the belt is fine and the tension measure at 10kg load is 4mm which is quiiet reasonable. everything is still intact. guess no body knows wht the heck im talkn bout. maybe it dsnt happen very often, but it does happen ppl so hellllllllppppppppppp meeeeeeeeeeeeee!! :O)

sounds like your pump went out disconnect the line that goes from your p/s to the rack and pinion and see if any fluid comes out if not than your pump is gone

Sorry to hear 'bout your steering aklxtace. The pump test sounds good! Just wondering if you can tell me how you apply the standard 10kg of force to the belt between the pullies for deflection measurement? My alternator belt tensioner arm is fractured in two places and only just still keeping the belt revolving! The part is on back order from Nissan, and i can't wait to get it and fit it to stop the howling on wet mornings!

Never seen an SR20, but i'd imagine you're right! Just wondering if there's any home made method involving actually applying the 10kg, or effectively measuring the deflection?

thankx for al ur replies. the load on the belt was tested at the garage by applying a flat 10kg metal bar standing verticly in the middle of the belt between the two pulleys and the deflection is measured using an electronic/laser distance measurer..change in distance will be the deflection..
i have just bought a pump, gna have to drop the engine to get the pump in. n when you dont own a garage these things r expensive to do - which i hate but i've sortd out a mates garage for a day to do the job (i hope it dsnt take longer than a day!!).
Or does anyone know of a way to get the pump in without droping the engine? cherz for the help ppz.
