Does anybody out there know where the knock sensor is and how hard is it to replace. I have 1997 200 se-r, and I just had my emissions done it passed, but they tell you on the print out which codes need attention and my was the knock sensor. So any help, direction anything would be good. I called nissan and they quoted me 510.00 thats parts and labor, and readjusting the timing.

The knock sensor is located on the firewall side of the block.
I have never replaced a knock sensor on a SR20 but I have read a thread about doing so here recently. Do a search on knock sensor.

I have the codes stores as well. No problems with my sensor.

I don't think you need a knock sensor. I have seen a lot of Nissans with that code stored but doesn't give a check engine light. If it senses knock, it will store a code. It doesn't need to literally have an audible knock but if it runs rough or has a good miss to it, it will sense knock. How's your car run? Good? Have you done a tuneup lately? Plugs, wires, cap, rotor? Those may help. Maybe run premium gas.

Edit: I see they wanted to adjust your timing. I would def. do too. Don't pay a shop to do your timing. You should be able to find someone that will do it for free.

I've done the tuneup the whole nine, and I can still tell that it's not right strong like it should be. It's not rough, but there are some hesitations here and there, and I know the knock sensor is retarding the timing.

Yeah there is a p0325 code which is for knock, and there is also a 0304, and 34. all knock senor codes. Which says in short either it's open, or loose.

I did a write-up on www.g20.net, (code 34) but the server is down right now, check it out later. I fixed mines cleaning up the block and the sensor itself.

I have spoken to some nissan service guys, and some say it may not be the knock sensor something else may be causing to trip. I'm going to take it in have them do a check so I'll know for sure.

the knock sensor will go off when something else is wrong with the car...when your egr goes wrong, the 0304 code will show up, along with other ecu codes...chances are if you have other codes as well, its not the knock sensor.

replacing the knock sensor is a b*tch!!! Unless you got some skinny long azz hands, then it might be easy for you. But its located in a difficult place right below the intake manifold. If you have a b14 it gets worse cause you have that stupid wish bone metal piece that is blocking everything! I suggest just take that stupid piece of shit off...all it does is hold your intake manifold to your block...you can use the one by the egr side to hold it..

but for 510.00 Sh*t, thats a whole new motor! I mess with it myself, then pay them 510 to do it...if you are willing to pay that knd of money, you are better off with a new engine. Nissan dealers will drain you dry if you take your car over there!

there should be a thread around here somewhere about how to get to the knock sensor or how to change it...best way for me is to just take the intake manifold out, or go from under the car and try to unscrew it off..

There is a common problem on these engines where the knock sensor gets soft, and it creates a false positive to the computer making your car think its knocking but its not. The trouble code will say knock sensor malfunction or something.

You can just replace it, thats what I did. on my 95, theres a hard coolant tube that runs right behind the knock sensor (which like was said above, is on the firewall side of the engine, its about the size of your entire thumb)making it very difficult to remove. What shops charge that 510+ $ for is that they actually go at it from the top end by ripping out the intake and etc. What i did was i bent that hard metal coolant tube in a little bit just enough where I could thread the bolt out all the way. Then, what you do is get a bolt the same size but one that has a special rust free coating and is a little bit shorter than the factory size and bolt on the new knock sensor. I work at an oil change shop so I was able to do it in a pit and look up and etc. I know for a fact your going to have to be gymnastics-flexible in order to do it creeping under your car or something. So if you don't have access to something like I did, I would just rip the intake apart or, get a friend or something to get it for you. Or just take one right in the wallet and just pay someone else to do so you dont have to worry about it anymore. However, those sensors are super expensive in stores. I got one off ebay that was meant for my car and everything for just 20$. So just look around before you just accept whatever the shop says to you. Hope this helps
