Overheated yesterday. Hose clamp broke and all fluid lost; water pump shot. Not necessarily in that order, but that's the end result. Is there a better alternative than OEM parts? Rad may need replacing - I've done a quick search but haven't found anything although I am sure that I have read in the past that upgrades are possible and recommended.

Where possible I've upgraded components to performance parts, but I have little timeline right now. It's my daily driver and I need to get it back on the road fast. Suggestions are welcome by 7:30 a.m. EST Thursday morning. After that I'll have bought the OEM parts.

Car's a NX 1600. GA16 engine. Great shape other than it doesn't hold water.

I don't know if there is a better alternative to OEM. I think that some aftermarket parts are built to OEM specs or even exceed it. Some aftermarket parts (can't remember which ones they are right now) have a 3 tier structure:

- cheap price, lower quality than OEM
- moderate price, quality equal to OEM
- most expensive, exceed OEM quality.

How long do you plan on keeping your car? If you plan on keeping it for a couple more years, then I'd get an OEM waterpump otherwise just get the cheapest one. I don't think that many people "upgrade" their waterpump. There were 3 1600NX's at Cookstown Auto Wreckers (Hwy 400 and 89). You could probably get one there for under $20 if you pulled the part yourself.

I think that you can use an NX2000 rad on the 1600s. If you're interested, I have an NX2000 rad + fans from my old car.

Good luck.

It will fit in place, but the neck that holds the rad hose is much smaller on the 1600s

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be going OEM - I'll be keeping the car for a few more years!

Enjoy.

I know I've got a good spare rad from my Sentra E (1.6) if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer. Rad was okay, however water pump, all hoses, the belts and a few other things were shot. Everything's running fine now, winter tires are on and I'm hoping that no more repairs are needed for quite a while.
Enjoy the weekend.
