: newbie who need help
Lastb0isct 12-02-2004, 01:21 PM Well i just recently purchased a SE-r and am debating on whether or not i should upgrade some stuff. I have stock everything and blown shocks. I want to put a nice susp. setup in but some of my friends are telling me that i probably don't have a stable chassis. Im wondering, what should i check to make sure that my car is O.K. to work on. I mean i want to have a nice handling car. Please advise me! What should i check on?!?!

type in "suspension setup b13"
Loads and loads of info about suspensions that've been tried and proven on b13 chassis
91 Talon 12-02-2004, 01:31 PM Don't have a stable chasis? What does that mean exactly? When you upgrade your suspension, your "chasis" should be just fine. Unless your car has a ton of rust throughout it.
liupj 12-02-2004, 01:31 PM what do they mean by "unstable chassis" ?
too much flex? the b13 is a unibody construction, very stable. Heck, the only real thing you might *MIGHT* want to upgrade is the rear sway bar so it rotates a little easier (though oversteer isn't always friendly, but its always fun)

well what i mean is what would i have to upgrade on my B13 if all the stuff has 170k on it(cept the engine which was replaced, i think...). Like how much would it cost to get Hyperco's with some decent shocks(non-adjustable are fine). And what little things should i replace...because i dun wanna have a shitty setup u know?!
Im thinking Hypercos with AGXs...are these a good deal?

enterthedragon1 12-02-2004, 05:03 PM they are a good deal if you got the cash! all your stuff should be in good shape, only thing i would get is s bushing set
enterthedragon1 12-02-2004, 05:07 PM just checked out the site, that site is WAY expensive man.
liupj 12-02-2004, 05:18 PM My car had 150k when purchased.
Put on groundcontrol's with kyb agx's, been running fine.
shouldn't need to upgrade anything. maybe bushings or mounts if yours are shot...
unstable chassis..? still doesn't explain anything, are your friends honda owners?

lol no they're not. HAHA i think they just want me to buy another motorcycle right now =/ but it's winter!
atomicbomberman 12-02-2004, 08:55 PM hmm, your chasis wouldn't be unstable unless its been in an accident. I'd say get a general check up, and start modding! Do mods that will replace worn parts first... brushings, clutch, suspension... brakes... and slowly build up the engine.
t bags 12-02-2004, 10:04 PM if ur on a budget most definitely get the preventive maintanence first..eg. tune up and oils, then go for some tokico blues with h and r's..sometimes its better to get the agx cause of the adjustibility.u car will run better with a fresh clutch in it.ur car could be bone stock and since ull have a clutch that grabs it will feel faster

I've never seen anyone happy with Tokico's on our cars.

So what do you suggest? just out of curiousity sake what is a good non-adjustable shock that can work with the Hyperco's or with H&Rs? Thanks
Save up the money and get KYB AGXes. Not just because they're adjustable, but because they're better at dampening stiffer springs.
Tokico HP's are fine for the stock springs. I ran a set for a while before I got my Hypercos, and they worked fine. Tokico was the OEM manufacturer for the struts that came on our cars off the showroom floor. These days they're pointless to buy because they're made as a stock replacement and other good stock replacements like the KYB GR2 are the same price or cheaper.
Hyperco Gen 2's aren't the most hardcore springs ever made, but they're roughly double the stock rates. They ride and handle great, but they're stiff enough to overwork a stock-type strut, and stiff enough be on the safe limit of the AGX. Mike Kojima doesn't recommend going too far beyond the 300/200lb rates of the Hyperco G2 for the sake of the AGX's durability.
So, get Eibach Prokits or H&R's if you want a car that looks good and corners all right on the street, but get Hypercos or Ground Control coil-overs minimum if you want a car that really handles.
Shawn B 12-03-2004, 05:30 PM Do a search on AGX's and shortened Koni's. You'll see an arguement for both. Either way, team the AGX's or shortened Koni's up with a set of Hyperco's and you'll be in real good shape. :D

where can i find the shortened koni's? and are they still good if they aren't shortened?
liupj 12-03-2004, 06:45 PM try using search..
I believe Andreas Miko might be able to get his hands on some.
Or Scott Higashi at shigspeed.
Shawn B 12-03-2004, 06:46 PM Do a search grasshopper-san and all shall be revealed ;) .
Try "shortened Koni's" or "B-13 suspension."
Steve makes shortened Koni's (that's 98sr20ve, but...ahem...don't bug him till you have cash in hand ;) ). Also, I'm pretty sure Motivational Engineering will still shorten them (M.E. has a web-site).
You can put together a bad-ass suspension for whatever your specific needs from the information on the forum :biggthump .
