I had this clutch for about 7 months. I broke in the clutch in for 1K miles and this is how this POS re-pays me

Every Spec clutch I have seen inperson looks just like that, including the one that I had in the pulsar. I tell people to stay away every chance I get.

I honestly don't get it. Seriously, I'm not talking trash or anything like that at all.

Every single SPEC clutch I have installed personally, has been nothing but stellar. I havn't been throwing chicken bones at them or anything, just making sure flywheel step is correct for the unit (Stage, whatever) new pilot bushing is in, surfaces are properly prepped, torque specs are per SPECS specifications, and the clutch is properly adjusted and broken in according to SPECS specifications. (Notice their puck discs are sprung and they don't use the typical OEM style disc.) Nothing more, nothing less. Not one single unit has failed on me, and I hear stories of guys going through them with the same problems all the time, and it's always the springs. It's driving me nuts now. I've got to get to the bottom of this and find the problem like I did with the Weisco piston issue. (Same scenario with the pistons. People breaking etc just in the SR20 community...it came down to installer error in that case. Easy mistake but it was a mistake non less and they mark the pistons now.)

SPEC is nothing but praised by the F-Body, Mustang, VW, MR2 and many other communities. Something is wrong, we just need to find out what.

I live by the book...Nissan book that is.
I noticed my flywheel did not have 1 grove in it; smae goes for the PP...smooth as a baby's ass. That leads to the conclusion that the disc just fell apart. I don't drive my car hard at all just because of the fear of breaking a tranny.

I have actually been considering one, seeing the good results that the hondas and SRTs have with them.

I have had my Spec stage 1 for about 4k miles on my VE with no problems. I had the flywheel stepped properly and I installed the clutch myself and tightened according to Nissan torque values. I broke the clutch in for maybe 500 miles.

Will...if your interested, the Spec PP is still good.

That is EXACTLY how my first Spec clutch was. Same stage, everything. Mine broke the rivets (shown in your pictures), and all the springs lost their tension, throwing them out of the hub. I was amazed at what the quality LOOKED like. Spec sent me another one, and I can hear the hub having play again, almost like the springs popped out. I'm going with Clutchmasters or the Competition Clutch sold by JGY in the spring.

On a side note, I respect Jay's comments very much. It just doesn't make sense though. I've done a few clutch jobs, and my first Spec stage clutch was installed correctly. I even did it twice to make sure it was correct. Jay, I will be more than happy to assist you in finding out if there is/was a manufacturing problem with Spec clutches for this particular model. I will stay updated with this thread, and PM you if I come up with anything.

I have over 20k miles on my 4 puck SPEC and I love it. Works with no issue.

I've only got a couple thousand on my stage 2 setup, but I like it so far. Only gave it around 400 miles to break in, and have made around 30 passes at the drag strip.
