Ok, so there is some smack talking on the B15 message boards about how a modded Spec V can beat a modded B13. WHat is the thoughts on this board about that? A guy had his SPEC V dyno'd and it put down the same #'s as SCC (141HP). I think that a bolt on classic will beat the spec V (both modded). B13s have better suspension, they are lighter and have a great powerband?
What do you guys think?
slowSER 12-04-2001, 08:36 AM I think a modded B13 or even B14 will smoke a modded Spec V because there's nothing out there to mod the Spec V. The older SE-R's will be running mid-14's while the Spec V will be stuck at mid-15's.
Do I get a prize for winning this argument?

In case you can't figure it out, that's sarcasm. I can't believe you message board racers are getting your panties in a wad over this.
Also, what makes the B13's suspension "better" than the Spec V?

Well, lets consider that the Spec V will have the same aftermarket as the B13..will your opinion change?
SE-Rican 12-04-2001, 09:58 AM I am not trying to be a hater. Its is a Nissan and it is part of the family. I accepted highly. But I am dying to race one. I bet a new SE-R that is modded will run hard as hell. I test drove one like 2 weeks ago. It was decent. But I honestly believe that stock it has no chance in beating a Classic or 200sx. Just my opinion.:D

This is like arguing about magazine times but since you asked ...
With equal mods, the Spec V should kick the B13's ass, even if the Spec V is underpowered as Lee's dyno shows.
I have also owned three modded B13's.
eric96ser 12-04-2001, 10:24 AM From what Lee said, the Spec V should be able to hold its own against moded cars. Stock for stock, the B13 will look like a Civic VX against the Spec V. All these people saying that the Spec V sucks, have either not driven one, or are comparing their moded car to a stock, not broken in car. I'm sure there will be aftermarket response to this car. JWT already has one. When the B13 came out, most imports were sporting chrome wheels and neon lights, not turbos, superchargers, and such. The aftermarket is a booming business these days, and companies will see the SE-R has a popular car. The Spec V was not built to be a drag car, it was designed as a track/autocross car.
slowSER 12-04-2001, 10:39 AM Does anybody know how many miles were on Lee's Spec V when he dynoed it?
eric96ser 12-04-2001, 10:58 AM I'm guessing about 1000. I would like to see in a few months, after these cars have more miles on them, what they will do. I would also like to see what a Altima 2.5 manual will do, since it has the same 175hp motor, but in a 5speed.
Jason92Classic 12-04-2001, 12:18 PM After driving the SPEC V, I came to the conclusion that mod for mod, there's no way short of a blowtorch that it can keep up with a B13. I'm willing to put money on this assessment.

After driving the spec v as well, i agree! Its a nice car, but its no original SE-R. weak limiter, the shifter sucks ass and i dont like the "carnival" interior. Oh well, whatever. The B15 guys think the SPEC V is the best thing since sliced bread....
MaddMatt 12-04-2001, 01:58 PM The B13 has low weight going for it. If you assume a header gives X horsepower increase on a Classic and approx. the same X hp increase on the V-spec, X hp goes further on a car that weighs 200-300 lbs less. Simple really.
An all motor V-spec is going to have trouble with all-motor B13s and 14s.
Just my $.02.

You can mod a B15 SE-R, but at the end of the day...
...you still have a B15 SE-R. ;)
I'll keep my Classic.

I couldn't have said it better myself!
Driven97 12-04-2001, 04:38 PM For my $18k, I'm thinking 1997 240sx with sr20det.

Why not 2 1990 240SXs with DETs?

Cause the 1990 240sx is kind of ugly, the 1997 is sweet as hell :D

I agree the 95+ 240s look better, but I think the 89-94 240s handle way better. Put an engine to match the fantasic chassis and that would be a great combo.
Yes-Ser 12-04-2001, 10:12 PM I dont care for the headlights of the 95 and 96 model year, but I love the 97-98's. If I ever come upon a large sum of money, S14 Silvia conversion here I come!:D
paNX2K&SE-R 12-05-2001, 02:15 AM Well after cruising around in Lee's Spec V I was really impressed. Stock for stock it is much better than the b13. It handles better, brakes better, is faster than, and has a more solid feel than the original. I think with some bolt ons that car will be tough competition for any 4 cyl car in a similar class. Not that I am dissing b13s, I have 2 of them but the Spec V is a *great* car. If I was looking for a new car and couldn't afford a WRX I would buy a spec V.

I think many people are forgetting the most important MOD here..... and that is the driver. I think just based on todays market the b13 will be faster than a spec V just b/c most b13 drivers are comfortable with their cars and willing to take them to the extreme. However, given a couple of years or maybe months and that may change but I don't think that the typical bolt ons for the spec V will have the returns that it does on the b13.
Just look at the times a lot of b13 owners are getting with a cone filter and an exhaust.
As far as handleing and braking and such I gotta give it to the spec v over the b13 unless the b13 has an after market setup. after all nissan had 10 years worth of r&d to work on this.
Hey paNX2K.... don't sweat not getting the wrx... many of the people buying them now adays are very atypical subaru drivers and are really turning the wrx into the stigma that honda drivers have. But if you really want one I will gladly trade you mine for your NX and SE-RT.
Peace
