I know there's the big post on bad idle. And I have searched before, but what would cause when slowing down to a stop and downshifting. when I stop the idle dives down below 500 rpm. but if i tap the throttle it'll come back up or sometimes it comes up by itself. It only does it after slowing down and not all the time and the regalar idle is perfect.

resetting your idle according to the factory proceedure might help along with your tps voltage... sometimes your ecu will be doing too much compensating if those aren't set properly. The good news is that my car used to do that and that one of the 29 fixes that I did fixed the problem. So there is hope.

i think the maf has been regrounded before. there's a long wire comming from the maf to a ground point on the intake mani.

I had this problem too, and when i downshifted into second, if i didnt get the clutch out quick enough the car would just die. Wound up that my distributor was completely advaced to about 28*. We set it back to 15 and now my car idles just fine.

you think a simple tune up would fix it. I have all stock nissan tune-up parts on there now. from the jdm motor so who nows how old they are.

I wouldnt think so, at least not completely. I just performed the major tune up about a week or so ago and mine still does it. It really made no change at all. Sorry, But I think that its something else.

Have you checked your timing??? If not I should be home tomorrow around 2-3. Stop by and let's check it.
Matter fact bring the tune up parts and let do it. GTIRoids

Take it over to your boys shop and have him check it out for you. You can do the tune up there anyway.
