Okay, post your thoughts. I'm not looking for something cheezy. It needs to get the job done. I'm a firm believer in V-1, being that I've had one or two, but need advice on whether I should go with yet another V1, or go with a Bel, or Escort...
Ive had 3 different radar detectors...they worked some of the time. My friends father is a cop and told me they have a new radar band that is undetectable by any radar detector out there right now. Its some new technology...I dunno if thats true but its something to think about. Maybe its only in our area.

Is it POP? I heard they only use that on highways, and it's very new. There are several radar detectors that can detect it.
POP usually is instant on KA, which is detectable, though usually too late if it's aimed at you. There's also laser technology out there, which is detectable as well.
POP uses DSP (digital signal processing) to instantly generate the microwave signal and send/receive in milliseconds.
At any rate, my old V1 (before confiscation a few years ago) could detect POP, just sometimes would detect as the gun hit my car. If pop KA is reflected off of another car, the V1 can pick it up if it's in it's general vicinity (think narrow band ka)
Oh, and for the record, if there's a new band out for radar guns, I'd know about it. Reason behind this is that the company must register their product to conform to FCC regulations, being that it's generating a signal and emitting it.
I'm an owner of both a V1 and a 8500. The 8500 actually slightly outperformed the V1 in a real world situation, full notification about 1.5 seconds before the V1.
DOH! And Rob had to show up and tell me about personal experiences of other systems outperforming my beloved V1's.
I'll look into the Escort as well, then. Thanks Rob. (Just hope that the one you mentioned doesn't have more bells and whistles than I need)
EDIT: That Escort looks great, but has too many features that I'm not going to use. Something about the signal direction arrows wins me over everytime, in addition to the signal strength, number of bogeys, and the flashing indicator warning of nearest threat. GPS is nice, but you're not always going to be going the same place, so storing stuff in memory isn't really needed for me.
Hey guys, what about remote mounted radar detectors? The ones where you stick a sensor over your rear plate and one in your front grill. I would want one of those so you could stealth mount it.
If a cop sees your radar detector when he pulls you over your chances of getting some sort of ticket is huge.
The directional arrows are nice in theory, but real world works like this:
You are hauling ass down the road, get an alert from ahead, stomp on the brakes or downshift discreetly and fade behind another motorist. As the signals get higher you spot the cop approaching in the oncoming lane. You watch the directional arrows to see the arrows change. Instead of the arrow going from forward to sideways while the cop is ACTUALLY beside you, what it really does is flash the sideways arrows for about a single flash / flash and a half, then go to the rear arrow.
The cop is actually about a 1/4 mile behind you when it finally flashes sideways, 1/2mile by the time it goes to the behind arrow.
I was SOOOOO disappointed the first time it happened. For some reason I expected it to literally point out where the cop was. Really you only have a front and a rear horn, it just displays the sideways arrows if it picks up signal in both front and rear horns.
The V1 is still an excellent detector, I had it hardwired in the NX for a couple years, just snatched it out to put in the BMW last month but haven't actually installed it yet.
I thought the GPS was a cool feature of the 9500i, pinpointing all the annoying gas stations and banks to delete them once and for all. The update capabilities and possibility of setting up a user network so you could download 'hotspots' for your trip. (example, these days some local podunk cops on the way to Atlanta on I85 have decided to turn the highway into a pirate's run with 4-5 cops in a 2 mile stretch, some with radar on and some who time you). Having an alert in the radar detector programmed by others who know about this little spot before being timed or hit with POP or laser would be beneficial.
I'll be keeping my V1 until such a network develops though.
In my personal experience using the V1, it has honestly saved my butt at LEAST once Rewind to about 1998-1999, heading down to H Town from Dallas at about 12:30 at night, on 45 South with a few friends in their cars. Just north of Huntsville, you dip down into a psuedo valley for a few minutes. We were going at a "very high" rate of speed, and as soon as we all advanced into this valley, my V1 went HAYWIRE! Freaked me out completely! I had five bogeys counted, with the up arrow flashing and signal strength almost pegged.
I immediately downshifted as fast as my car would allow, to the speed limit. About 10 seconds later, two troopers are sitting in the median, facing opposing directions. Not even 20 seconds after that, another trooper is sitting in the median, also waiting to catch someone. I never saw the other two, so I couldn't verify if they were in fact off to the left and right as the arrows indicated, or if it was just noise from the troopers vehicles.
Bottom line, is that from that day forward, I trusted my beloved V1 more than any other radar detector I've used. I've actually been pulled over a few times using other cheapie radar detectors on that same stretch of 45.
Anyhow, as stated, that 9500 sounds sweet as heck, but I just don't see myself needing all the extra features. And as others may not know, but we do, we can still send off the V1's for lifetime upgrades
Good timing for this thread. I just recently decided I needed one. I was on my way to Mid-Ohio and a half-hour into the trip realized I forgot my helmet! Big, stupid mistake! Ran home, grabbed it, and then made the hour and 15 minute trip in 45 minutes.
