B13 cluster swap problems...

Hey guys help me out here,

I have 2 issues here. I am swapping a 91-92 NX2000 gauge cluster into my auto-manual swapped 94.5 XE. I have pinned out all the wires needed, put a speedo pinion into the tranny, cut a hole and ran a speedo cable to the cluster.

For the tach, I had an aftermarket one I was only able to get working by hacking the coil and running a wire to (the blue/black wire at ECU pin #2 didnt do anything). I tried running that same coil wire to the new cluster for the tach signal, but that shorted the ignition somehow and the car would only crank and not start. Disconnecting that wire, everything works fine.

EXCEPT no speed info. I somehow thought that with a cable-driven one I could ignore the cluster wires for the 'speed sensor' - the XE had 4 wires and the nx one has only 2.

Do I need to power the cable-driven speedo for it to work? If so, what wires could I choose (on the diagram it looks like the XE had 2 powered and 2 ground wires)?

For the tach, has anybody else been able to find an alternate ECU harness wire that carries a tach signal? I ran ECUtalk with a consult cable and got good RPM data, so I know the ECU is getting a signal from the engine.\

Thanks for any help/ideas.

Dan

Ok So I put the ECU tach signal wire to the correct position. Speedo cable is installed right, and all should be well.

But, no tach and no speedo.

I am wondering if it is possible that I fried tach and/or speedo when I used my coil hacked wire for the tach signal, and the car only cranked with no start.???

Any way to test the tach and/or speedo? The cable is good. The pinion is good and all the way in. I have wired up tach and speedo as per toolapcfan's writeup.

Only other things I can think of are, I didnt wire up the water temp sensor, since mine doesnt give a good signal anyways (I have aftermarket so it didnt matter to me), I also skipped wiring up the buzzer, seatbelt light, washer indicator and similar useless crap.

No motion at all from speedo or tach at ACC or when car is running, and moving.

Weird. Looks like I downgraded since I already removed my mini-tach.

I am a bit confused by your posts. For the spedometer drive, you removed the stock electronic speedo drive in the transmission and installed a mechanical speedo drive from an earlier model, correct?

If that is the case, the spedometer should be working, provided that the cable is attached at both ends. This is easier said than done.

It can be difficult to keep the gauge end of the spedometer cable engaged in the dash while you screw the transmission end in. When I did a clutch job recently, the spedometer did not work, because while I screwed the cable into the transmission, I accidentally pulled the cable out of the dash end. The cable can be difficult to install without doing this. It is worth checking for sure.

As for the wiring of the tach, unfortunately I am not going to be of much help.

Yeah thats what I did. I think the cable might not be correctly connected, I know its not broken, and I took care to attach cluster end first and then tranny, but I will try again all the same.

As for the tach, its a mystery to me. I also dont understand why the ignition shorts if you use the signal wire from the coil to send signal to the cluster - its just a signal isnt it??

Anyways, if I cant rig it up right, I'll just rewire all the harness connectors back to stock, put back my crappy cluster, gut and fit my mini-tach into it, and have fun putting an electric speed sensor into the tranny and connect it back to my harness.

Ahh...if it ain't broke, don't fix it . Just FYI, I had originally (mistakenly) thought that a 91-92 tranny that came with a speedo pinion couldn;t take a 93-94 speed sensor, so after putting said tranny in my 94 car and having no speedo, I got a 91-92 NX2K cluster, speedo cable and pinion. I also got an electric sensor, since the one I had from my auto had a different number of teeth.

Now I wish I Kept It Simple, Stupid. lol

Turns out my tranny is a speed sensor eater...when we swapped from auto, buddy put the auto sensor in it and it had the wrong number of teeth...when I pulled it it was mangled. I put in one for a cable speedo, and when I pulled it yesterday it was also munched. I felt around inside and the gear that meshes with the sensor's teeth was kind of loose feeling. So still no speedo. It'll have to do until I get a NX1600 tranny. Don't really need a speedo on that car anyways, you know when you are going too fast. Everything vibrates and the exhaust is loud as hell.

As for the tach, still a mystery to me why no signal from the ECU. One of those wires must be it, but for me its not the blue/black stripe at ECU #2.

Anyways I made a frankencluster for now with my mini-tach hacked into it in place of the stock temp gauge.
