Trust me when I say this... Subs in the rear, Comps in the front doors and 2-3 way speakers in the rear with 80% fade. It doesn't get any better than that.
Been doing this a long time and this by far is the best. Honestly you don't need rear stage speakers as it is. But to get a nice clean all around for passengers in front and rear. It doesn't hurt.
And for the money and quality people... Look into eD. I'm telling you... I have never been more serious about a speaker company more then them. These guys know what they are doing ahve have amazing products.
More speakers is worse for preside reproduction of sound. If precision is must, then just use a pair wide-range drivers- that is pretty much what most cars come with….

Components will give you better clarity, but yes that is what most cars come with. Keep in mind those stock speakers suck the big one
People add speakers of different diameter to emphasize certain ranges of audio spectrum. However every time you make an emphasis, you modify original sound wave, so reproduction becomes less authentic, especially if interferences between different drivers are involved...
Depends on what you're considering the 'authentic' reproduction. If you, like most, consider it to be the actual recording quality, then different frequency response speakers tuned properly give you more authentic sound, as one speaker can't do the job of 3.
On a side note, speaker diameter doesn't necessarily dictate it's frequency reproductions.
Just remember, alot of it is personal preference here too. Certain people like certain systems certain ways. No one setup works for everyone.
I don't disagree with you, BUT... if it's about sound quality. Rear speakers with a sub is where 95% of distortion comes from. But then again, this depends on how the actually install was done yes.
Say if your going with a bandpass box from best buy with port's though the rear deck lid, seat or with the seat down. Then that's fine.
But, for the most part people go the all around way of a box in the trunk for a sub. <sealed or ported> Front and rear mids and highs. None ported rear deck or seat down. Compression is compression no matter how you look at it. If there is no ventilation for air mass. It's coming though the rear deck and from the rear stage. Which in turn will cause major distortion.
But you are right, not one setup works for everyone. It's all about quality of sound. And I refuse to give out information for bad sound.

Don't get me started on the crap we sell at the BB.

AMEN to that!!!
EDIT: Just to put this out there, I currently have one 12" sub in the trunk and components up front. No rear speakers. Sounds fabulous. Not sure how it would sound in a 4dr setup, but for the little 200sx it's wonderful!

Well let's just say... it was WAY better back in the Cerwin Vega days. I actually got a nice ass basic bandpass with my discount from there like 14 years ago right. Duel ported per side duel 10" box.. It was flat, long and fit PERFECT between the rear strut sheet metal of the b13 I had.
:::Picture This:::
I re worked the ports with some PVC to curve from the stock location to the middle at a " / " from the left and " \ " from the right. Joined the two on one side to a coupler and the same for the other side to the top of the box. Which made 2 ports from 4 in all. OK?!
Now form there I took 2 more 4" ports and took out the rear seat, marked where I wanted them. Cut 2 4" holes in the seat. Took the ports that came with the box with the nice tapered edge and mounted them in the holes in the rear seat. Connected them from the box to the back of the seat once the seat was back in..
WOW!!! You want to talk about some fu*king SPL from 2 Old school Rockford punches. To this day, I have never heard 2 basic 10's hit like that. And they where single 8 ohm VC.

One wide-range speaker plays all frequencies at the same time without a single problem as long as it stays within its excursion limits. If you intuitively disagree, think about headphone speakers that play all frequencies with one wide-rande driver.
I agree that "diameter does not necessary dictate" speaker's frequency response but in general, for majority of speakers, there is very high correlation between diameter and frequency response.

Currently I have an Alpine Type X subwoofer in the trunk and a Rockford component system up front. Once I had the amps and deck tuned properly, it was amazing.

Damn! A 12" Alpine Type X? Do you have like 1000 watts RMS powering that baby? You must have tons of bass.
Right now it's powered by the new Rockford 1000.1 amp, which IMO is just enough. It gets there, but I might have to sell them so I have money to fix my engine stuffs
