Installing a voltmeter gauge

I searched on the forum regarding the lighter but didnt find much, and didnt find exactly what I was looking for, maybe you guys can help me. I am putting in a basic voltmeter gauge, and I want to tap it into the wires going to the cigarette lighter. But there are two plugs that connect to the lighter. I wondered if you new what the different colors of wires were, I need to find power, ground, and a wire to tap for the dashboard lighting so it will light up and dim. I have done this before on my Toyota, but all three (and only three) wires were right where I needed them and I knew which color was which. Plus the lighter had a lit ring around the plug hole so I had a light wire to tap into also. If you can steer me in the right direction, please do. Would the colors described in this wiring diagram for the stereo plug also apply to the rest of the wiring in the dash? --- I was also looking for pics of the wiring in the dash, behind the console, and couldnt find any. http://installdr.com/Harnesses/Nissan-Wiring.pdf
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know this seems like simple stuff, but when it comes down to it, I suck at it...so I am careful how I go about it. Thanks...

just use a test light..the cig lighter has 2 pcs-an o-lighted ring and the power/grd..
if u dont have a test light or multimeter then u need to invest in some tools..but if ur in a bind for cash then use the voltmeter as a multimeter.

1. remove ur cig lighter from the lower dash unit/and seperate it from the o-ring
2.grd ur multimeter to the blk wire on the power side of the cig lighter or to one of the screws that are under ur shift boot
3.crimp onto the power wire on the cig lighter and touch the ign side of the voltmeter, when u turn the key it should go to 13-14
4.crimp on the o-ring on the cig lighter and thats ur signal for the gauge light

its been a while and the giants just won so i have like 100oz on liq in me and mj just touoched a grapevine so ill x2 in the am
