Tach troubles

Okay folks, here is the background. A couple of months I brought a g20 back from the dead. It had a blown head gasket so I swapped the engine. Well, the tach never worked. I have a radio with a tach so I used this to setup the car.
Tonight I went to install an aftermarket tach and much to my surprise it doesn't work either. It works in my NX but no love on the G.
I tapped the signal wire into the ECU Blue with Black stripe. Do you all have any suggestions what I may check next? I heard people talk about tapping directly into the distributor. Can anyone think of what may be causing the signal not to make it to the ECU?
Unfortunately I don't have a repair guide handy so I can't trace it at this time.
thanks for any info!
