I saved 5 seconds......and lost $120......grrrrrrr
I broke one of the cardinal rules of mechanics:when working on the car, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!!! Well I did it at first when I had change the alternator. After testing it to see if it was okay, I tried to reconnect the power wire to my amp and accidentally touched the power wire to the metal frame on the amp(which is itself connected to the metal frame of the car.) Now, I've checked the fuses to the amp and on the wire yet they seem ok.
I do distinctly smelling a burning smell nearby the amp. I didn't think much of this at first but after seeing that both fuses were fine I may have messed up some thing in the amp..........grrrrrr......
Just wanted to let you guys know; never take short cuts

Not rubbing it in, but that's rule number one in the book.
Sorry to hear about stuff like that. What kind of amp was it?

Re: I saved 5 seconds......and lost $120......grrrrrrr
hmmmmmmmmmmm 1st problem is its a crunch amp. Ok for power, but no safety circuits. 2nd problem is you tried to hook it up yourself. There is a reason why there are Professionals like myself in the field of car audio with certifications to do that kind of work. Sorry to hear about your amp but a few dollars and a person with a certification could have saved you that money in the first place. Lesson learned.
Re: I saved 5 seconds......and lost $120......grrrrrrr
^^^on crack you dont need a professional to hook it up yourself just dissconnect the battery. ive been doing car stereos for 5+ years never blew up an amp yet...other than blowing up polk gnx12's and mtx8000 series 12s thats the only sh*t we broke.

Guys, let's not turn this into a heated debate over a simple little mistake. The point of my thread was to let off some steam, kick myself a few times and warn others not to make the same simple but COSTLY error........
Re: I saved 5 seconds......and lost $120......grrrrrrr
'least it was just a $120 amp... time to upgrade
As far as I'm concerned though, I'd rather ruin a $125 amp, than pay $60+ to a "professional" installer. I've had too many bad experiences with "professionals" that overcharge me, don't do things right in general and neglect to wire everything in the configuration I've specified. Besides all that, you learned, and that's the real point.

Exactly. In fact, I learned to do most of my own stuff when I paid some "professionals" to install it and they did such a bad job that a crackhead could have done it better. From that point on, I vowed to learn how to do all car repairs myself. Slowly but surely I'm learning......
Re: I saved 5 seconds......and lost $120......grrrrrrr
try installing anything audio related in a brand new car, and you will see where professionals come in handy
Also, I didnt disconnect the battery when I installed my first header and blew a fusible link, but for a while i thought i really messed the computer up.
